windows will update to 8.1 in one day.

I have a customer that works for an insurance company and says that his laptop upon login will tell him that it is going to upgrade to windows 8.1 in 1 day.

He says that he has software that will not work on 8.1, but works fine on windows 8. He said that he never downloaded it from the store but somehow last week it started giving him warnings that it will install anyways.

I have never seen this before and google has been of no help If I choose to change updates from install automatically to download updates but let me choose to install, would that stop it?

Sorry I don't have much info. Client was not very helpful with details over the phone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would change it to "never check for updates" for now AND purge the windows update download files/cache (google it).

Its likely that the computer has already downloaded the update to the machine and is just giving fair warning it will do the install.

After doing what Jimbo said open the Group Policy editory, go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Store, and then disable it completely.

Possibly controlled by the IT department of that insurance company? And they squirted out a GPO to do that, or some RMM tool they use. Might be out of his control. Not enough info.
