After removing the dreaded zero.access rootkit, I am now receiving Windows Update Error 80096001. I have tried everything I can think of, including Microsoft's solutions (manual and Fixit) and the tools in D7. One thing regarding this problem is that when I try Microsoft's manual method, I am unable to rename or delete the catroot2 folder, even in safe mode.
SFC reports problems it can't fix but when I try and open the log file it gives me an "access denied" error, so I have to copy and paste it somewhere else (desktop usually) in order to view it. The only error in the log that is not able to be repaired is the settings.ini file for the desktop.
