windows service causing explorer to crash

We had a computer with a bad drive we cloned. It is booting now, but some service is causing it to crash explorer every 10 seconeds. Is there an easier way to trouble shoot this other than shutting down every service one by one?

Can you read the Event Viewer or System Reliability Monitor or won't the problem let you see those?

Boot safe mode, pull up msconfig, go to services tab, click hide MS Services, shut down all others and reboot to see if it stops explorer from crashing.

Can you pull up task manager and restart explorer manually or does it keep crashing no matter how many times you restart it?

Cloned from a bad hard drive? Would not spend much time on that. Corruption from a fail read is likely to be the cause. Fabs the data and nuke it from orbit.

You can get a lot done in ten seconds - it's even long enough to run a repair installation of Windows...

we did a repair install without luck.

I agree with @nlinecomputers that this smells of a problem on the old drive thats been carried across.

No we ended up reloading. For what ever reason we always forget to use dism. Will that fix things a repair install will not?

Not sure how dism stacks up against a repair install, honestly. Dism will fix many issues with corrupt or broken system files akin to a SFC.

Yes. It doesn’t just copy over files. It checks for broken DLL links and traces out some registry entries.
