windows cant find msimn.exe ??

I have been working on a an old xp pro white box no name brand machine that freezes up after 5-10 minutes. My last hurdle was trying to get the outlook express 6 mail files in order to transfer them to a new Win 7 home premium machine with outlook 2007.

I decided to clean/blow out this machine and saw more dust bunnies than I have ever encountered before.

When I turned it back on and tried to open Outlook Express I got a pop up saying windows was searching for the following file

msimn.exe

I've read and read and am just more confused as to what happened and why I lost the file blowing out the machine.

Any suggestions ? I just want to get the OE 6 back to opening up !

I edited the post....hopefully clearer now.

I think the computer gods are taking special interest in tripping me up right now...seems like I;m in one of those streaks where i cant even plug in a usb jack properly :)
 
Ok, first thing is to remove the thought that cleaning it had an effect on that file.

You didnt finish the whole OE6 to Win7 thing before the cleanup/shutdown ?. Why not, was there any kind of problem ?.

I would first run an assortment of disk/file checks (chkdsk, sfc, etc) and virus scanning wouldnt hurt if you havent done it already. You dont mention MSIMN specific fixes you might have already done so let me throw this one at you (forget the sales pitches):

My first job on the old xp machine was to transfer all the clients pictures and docs to the new machine. No problems except the annoying freeze up that he didnt tell me about till I got on premise .

I did get somewhat frustrated as he had pics and docs scattered all over the place.

I did call the ISP providers tech support and they "walked me through" setting up the email on the new machine. He asked me for the pop,stmp settings and such on the old machine.....I asked him if he would be able to help transfer the old mail to the new machine and he said yes.

Once we got the new machine online and receiving mail I asked how we should start transfering the messages. He said that was outside the scope of his job.

OVERSEAS CALL CENTER.....definite language issues.

I was just glad to get the new machine receiving email. I was at a loss because the owner did not have has pop,stmp settings or passwords.

Now I blow out the machine....power up and get the searching for missing file pop up.

I too doubt the cleaning did anything.

There were also issues with the ISP had changed hands and part of the pop stmp server name had changed.

It is possible I changed something in the old machine while on the tech support line.

I have manually backed up dbx,pst files and such a few times over the years and restored them successfully.

I'm mainly scared of loosing the clients email.

I have looked at the link you sent in my research and its on top of my list to try.

Ha, ha, f-cking clients, am I right?. Its these things that always add frustration to a job you thought could be fixed sooner.

ps - "I'm mainly scared of loosing the clients email." if that's an issue I would try to locate the file structure for this and back it up to something, even a thumb drive.
 
I always love the "little" things they forget to mention......and the "little" extra things they want done :)

But it is all good......I am paying my dues. Learning from my mistakes.

I'll just tell him I have to have the old machine at my shop. Dig in in peace and quite and find those files.

You know it becomes more and more obvious to me every day that

90 something percent of computer problems would be "minor" if only the user had a back up system and a legitimate for pay antivirus/malware program running.

But then......we wouldnt have jobs :)
