A customer installed a fresh copy of windows xp home on his computer, and when he tried activation it said the key was already used, and gave him the 30 days. Well, its been 21 days since he did that and since then he has done alot on his pc. like pictures and programs and setting everything up. I ordered him a new oem copy of windows for system builders and did the upgrade thinking i could just put in the new key and everything would be good. when i boot up his pc, it still asking me to activate, and when i go to activate it, nothing happens. it shows the activation file running in task manager, but no activation window comes up. Can anyone tell me how to activate or get rid of the activation pop up.

If the customer has the original CD and COA then you should have just called Microsoft. There was no reason to buy another copy (unless of course he had a pirated copy).

No reason to re-install either.....

Sounds like that customer has:

1) Victim of a key gen, someone used his number via keygen or software return.

or

2) Counterfeit at one time i found a supplier that sold cheap oem, everything looked genuine at the time we contacted microsoft sent them a pack it was soo good it took them 5 days to find out it was counterfeit.

They got shutdown and rcmp seized everything.

best to re-partition and format and re-install with new disk.

I am just wondering why the activation window wont even come up so i can try to activate. Right when i click the activation icon, nothing happens.

You installed the new version over the old version.. right? maybe there are still some left over files, messing things up.

Go to C:\Windows\System32
Find the file "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" (if it exists) and rename them to "wpadbl.new" and "wpabak.new"

Click on Start
Find and Click “Run”
Type regedit
Click the plus next to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE”
Click the plus next to “SOFTWARE”
Click the plus next to “Microsoft”
Click the plus next to “Windows NT”
Click the plus next to “CurrentVersion”
Click “WPAEvents”
On the right panel, find “OOBETimer” then double click it.
Now, Delete all the Values by highlighting it, then delete it
Then type in this value without the quotation mark “FF D5 71 D6 8B 6A 8D 6F D5 33 93 FD”
Then after that click OK,
Then on the left panel right click WPAEvents, then click on permissions
Then click System or SYSTEM, then Deny Full Control, then Click OK.
Then close Registry Editor
To Verify that it works, go to start, then “activate windows”, or go to start, then all programs, then “activate windows”
If it says that Windows has been activated.

all else fails 888-571-2048 call ms

There is the possibility that the OS has been hacked to fool activation.

If I have problems like that, I usually just call MS and they quickly handle it on the phone.
