windows 8 to wiindows 8.1

I have a client that reformated their hard drive and put windows 8 back on it. They were using windows 10. They had a vendor for a software they had remote in and totally messed it up. From what i hear would not boot could not get into system restore or safe mode. Instead of calling me first they called dell. Its a dell AIO and of course because they could not get into windows so they could not remote in. THey advise reinstalling windows 8. They did. I get called in to get everything reinstalled and i do. Now they want to go to 8.1 works better with a program said a different vendor or who knows. The client is additament to upgrade.
I just want to make sure i can upgrade it from 8 to 8.1 without losing all the programs and data. I have been doing some research and i am finding mixed messages. Some sites say it does save everything others say it saves nothing. I myself have never done a 8 to 8.1 upgrade so i just want to be sure telling them the right thing. This has been a real nightmare even though i did nothing wrong and came i after as you can image the client is frustrated

The Windows 8.1 Upgrade should (and for me, always has) been a simple affair. Make sure that all Windows Updates are applied before the 8.1 Upgrade though! Then just download it and let it do it's thing!
I've never had any issues with it.

I've had it frequently not work. Why are you not putting windows 10 back on it? I've NEVER seen a program that would run on either 8 and not run just fine on Windows 10.

I had an Architect with TurboCAD, that had some issues going from 8.1 to 10. It was quickly sorted by a quick call to their support though.

I'm reinstalling win 8.1 for a client right now, she tried Win 10 for over a month, didn't like it so brought the laptop in for us to reinstall with Win 8.1

No accounting for taste!

Make an image before the upgrade, "just in case." No need for the anxiety.

Thanks everyone. Maybe i am over thinking it because this has been such a nightmare. We be making a backup image but wanted to make sure i was prepared. They are not going back to windows 10 in fear of the something happening. I said it was probably not windows 10 but since they had just upgrade that week that is what they believe.

A lot of times, clients will create a cause and effect in their mind. Something got upgraded, now something else bad happened, they blamed the first thing that changed. Windows 10 is great if it's a clean install. Don't bother with doing an upgrade. Just wipe, and turn off all the Cortana and statistic monitoring they ask you about at the welcome screen.

Windows 8 and 8.1 are crap. But if your client is stuck on keeping 8, then I'd again recommend wiping with 8.1 rather than doing the in-place upgrade. However, just to answer to your question, you will not loose any data or programs when doing the in-place from 8 to 8.1.

When I did my step-son's HP laptop with Win 8, after all updates done, Win 8.1 was then available from the Windows App Store....(it did not show available until most of the normal Win 8 updates (perhaps 110-ish of 121, if memory serves?) were complete.

Woa! Quite a bit out there that won't make the Win10 cut. Even QuickBooks that is older than a year or so has its issues. Games are hit or miss on Win10 also. (You'd be surprised at how many adult gamers there are out there.)
