We've got a troublesome workstation that, after a restart, has no network connectivity.
Upon restarting the workstation, a yellow exclamation mark appears over the network adapter icon in the taskbar/notification area. Additionally, the yellow exclamation mark also appears over the network adapter icon on the login page.
The workstation is a Dell Optiplex and is approximately 2 months old. It is running Windows 8.1 Professional.
When the yellow exclamation mark appears, the workstation of course has no network connectivity and assigns itself an APIPA (169.) address.
To restore network connectivity it is necessary to either disable the network card and re-enable it, or unplug the network cable and re-connect it. Once the workstation regains connectivity it is fine until the next restart.
The issue is intermittent. For example during my tests yesterday I restarted the system 9 times and out of those restarts 5 times the yellow exclamation mark appeared and 4 times it didn’t and connected fine. Each time a restart is carried out it is 50/50 as to whether it will display the yellow exclamation mark or not. I found that it would not work say 3 times in a row, then work ok on the 4th restart, but then fail on the 5th restart and vice versa.
The system doesn’t lose connectivity once it has it – only after a restart/power off and restart does the issue occur
We’ve got a number of other identical systems all purchased at the same time – none of these are experiencing the same problem
We've done some troubleshooting already:-
- Complete removal of anti-virus/security software (Panda EndPoint).
- Different network cable and network point.
- Install all available Windows Updates.
- Install latest network interface drivers (Realtek) and also test with old drivers.
- Static IP (we use DHCP via SBS 2008 server).
- Reviewed Event Logs.
- Repaired winsock/TCP IP
I was wondering if any fellow members could suggest anything? We've not tried installing a new NIC yet but we can order one of these if necessary.
Thanks in advance
