I've put several programs on now and all go on right hand side as tiles.

Nowhere can I find the good old list of programs.

Sorry MS but if this is the way to go, excuse me but not everyone is a smartphone user!

I hope they put a 'old' way of accessing applications other than only by tiles!

Sorry - I know we should keep up etc but I really do see this a backward step for the majority of PC users. The younger ones will think its a natural progress but majority not yet!

I've just tried installing Avast Free, and it borked it. Windows 8 then proceeded to revert itself back to an earlier time.

I agree, in it's current state I can't see anyone wanting this on a desktop which doesn't have a touchscreen, even then I don't think I would want it. I can only see this being used on smart phones and tablets.
 
I found a reg key on the Internet to fix the start menu to the Win 7 standard.

Metro apps won't take-off Unless they make Visual Studio free. It will probably be like Java...
 
I think the speed and efficiency improvements are always welcome and maybe the explorer ribbon could be made to work, but like others here, this metro and tiles stuff should be kept to tablets and phones only. It just feels so out of place unneeded on a standard desktop. Perhaps a complete redesign of the sidebar would be better.

It is amusing though, when you look around the web at people who have said they don't like the Metro addition, they are accused of being 'out of touch', 'in the dark ages' or 'afraid of change'! On the whole Windows 7 ain't broke, so don't take a sledgehammer to try and fix it.
 
We have to remember this is a beta which is aimed at developers who are going to be creating Metro apps. I suspect the end product will allow you to choose whether you want the Metro UI or the standard desktop as your UI. It could even be automatic as th operating system would know if a touch enabled screen was installed.

I have a windows 7 phone so I' used to the tile style screen and I really like it. But not for a standard desktop without a touch sensitive screen.
 
I would agree we have to bear in mind the name of this distro and what it's aimed at. Metro is being pushed by Microsoft as a 'big' thing in Win 8 so we'll have to wait for a beta or RC to see what other 'big' things will be on offer if Metro isn't for you...
 
The screen shots I've seen of Metro looked like rainbow vomit to me. I'm slightly reassured that it's not quite that bad here.

I was trying to get to bed last night looking for shutdown options. I blame fatigue as C-A-D didn't cross my mind but, for some things, I get into an end-user sort of mindframe and you just know that most folks wouldn't think of that either. (On the junker I installed it on, no keyboard power button and the one on the tower is fickle)

I liked the weather app as an inclusion but wasn't impressed that they'd not put a Celcius option in there. Way to exclude most of the world, MS.

Click your username and select log off. Then the login screen has a shutdown option. I'm guessing that will be fixed before rtm. I can't wait for new versions to start coming out.

I have notice that on multiple web sites including this one, people seem to think that the new UI is it and the old desktop is not available. That is simply not the case.

The new UI is aimed at touch screen devices, but can also be used on a desktop with a mouse. The Windows 7 desktop is still there underneath and can be used.

I have not downloaded the preview yet so I do not how to turn off the new UI, but Microsoft says is can be done.
 
I have taken a quick tour on this pre-bèta in a VM and I'm with everyone who dislikes the metro interface as well :eek:
For phones and tablets, sure, with some further development and polishing this would be fine but for desktop or laptop? No thanks. If possible I'd bypass it straight into the desktop 'app'.

Further, I guess any professional version will start in the desktop environment anyway. Unless ofcourse there'll be apps for all sorts of office software. Then again, a metro interface filled with apps like on Android or iPhone wouldn't be very appealing to businesses, at least IMHO.

But, let's not forget that this isn't even a bèta yet. It's an unpolished rock for developers to toss on a water surface and see if and how many times it bounces. Let's wait and see what the outcome is, just a pretty rock or a diamond ;)
I can't wait to get my hands on later bètas or the RC to kill some free time!
 
I installed Windows 8 Dev Preview on my old Dell XPS Gen 4. It has a P4 3.4GHz, 2gb RAM, Nvidia 8500GT, 80gb SATA drive.

It bombed on first boot. Rebooted - installed fine. I don't like the fact that it bugs you about creating a LiveID but I'll get over it. The Metro Tile UI reminds me of their Win7 phones so I looked for a way to turn that off - I found it here:

Run it once and click the big button to turn off the Metro UI. Click it again to turn Metro back on.

After turning off Metro, I was able play around a bit. So far, I like it but I gotta say I'm not looking forward to troubleshooting that Metro UI.
