Windows 8.1 Out?

yep, it is out - I have updated my personal W8 pro laptop through the windows store. It was pretty painless and I like the features, especially the improved search from the start screen and the ability to make it boot to desktop.

One sneaky good feature is the ability to set the background of the start screen to be the same as the desktop wallpaper. I think that subtle change will help end users not feel as overwhelmed by the start screen.

I got an email from start is back people saying it breaks 8.1
and they have a new version that has to be installed before 8.1 update
I can see a can of worms thinking about all the win8 I have put start is back on
Since you can only get it from app store and I set up users with local accounts
I doubt they will upgrade
I will clone my win8 laptop and install 8.1 on first version of start is back to see what happens.

Don't know if its because am running windows 8.1 preview but its not on my store. I will remove the preview now and see what happens

Just a heads up, it does take a while to install. During a good part of the install your computer is unavailable.

Be sure you have plenty of time

I updated from the store on Thursday AM. It took almost 2 hours to download/install/setup. Probably a bit less now that the initial surge in demand is probably less.

I have run into some incompatible IE plug-ins with IE11:

Evernote (V4)
- Evernote extension

Kaspersky (I am using KIS 2014):
- Content Plug-in
- Virtual Keyboard Plug-in
- Safe Money Plug-in
- URL Advisor Plug-in

Microsoft (!!!):
- Lync Browser Helper

Others:
- Dashlane Toolbar
- Dashlane HBO

Kaspersky wants me to uninstall KIS and reinstall it to get an update that is needed for 8.1. SInce I use Chrome primarily, It may be a while until I have the time to try it.

Has anyone found a way to update system without having to download the update from the store each time. at the moment it's taking around 6+ hours to download it for each repair I do, Which is meaning PC's sitting on the bench longer.

Update - I think I've found a way I'll update later if it works. Will save a lot of bandwidth if possible.

.... Incidentally, the upgrade needs 5.2GB of free hard drive space.

Looks like I need to upgrade my old 32GB ssd.

5.2 gigabytes to make improved search from the start screen and the ability to make it boot to desktop.
And to set the background of the start screen

thanks for all your help.

As for the network install, still not found it. Will m/s be releasing a upgrade 8.1 file we can put on a pen drive and install it on other computers in the work shop to save on the our bandwidth :)

I upgraded my 8 to 8.1 and all seemed to go ok. Last night going to bed I noticed it was updating devices I think it displayed. Left it overnight and still the same this morning so turned it off and it displayed that it had a problem and was going back to 8 which it did
