Hello I recieved a computer this morning that when you swtich the computer on a password apears and wont let you logon to thr laptop,

I have done a format and install but seems to still be doing it.

Has anyone herd of this

It is a windows 7 machine 64bit
Compaq presario CCQ61

thanks

Could be a password set in the BIOS? Does this prompt you before it boots into the OS? Set as an extra security function.

Ask the owner what the password is. They use it everyday so I assume they know. If they don't know I'd be concerned about where this has come from.

Thanks kcooke1983

I have checked the bios and no passwords have been set, and the customer said her password is a 4 digt letter combination, but this is a 12

I have formated and reinstalled windows 7 biut still the same rather weird

So if it's not a BIOS password, could it be windows or a 3rd party application asking for a password? How about a photo of this occuring?

Not to be funny, but is this laptop legit? Has it been stolen? Sounds like a corporate laptop to me.

If you don't know the password, you don't know its length. It's common for password fields to show a set length of asterisks so that you can't guess its length and to make it harder, for that reason, to crack. It might be 12 but, unless you've got info you're not providing, it probably isn't.

Off the top of my head, there are four types of password that it could be:
* BIOS-level password
* HD-level password
* HD-encryption software (e.g. Truecrypt)
* Windows login (easily recognized)

Without more information, it's any of the first three and we can't guess further.

Many BIOSeses now let you setup a HD password, mine does. Without the password you can't do anything.

Changing the hard drive might solve the problem.

PS I only ever do password resets if I know the customer, got one at the moment, for some reason the customer can't remember the login password. I know its the customers laptop because I've worked on it before, but if it was a new customer I would be a bit suspicious!

If it's a BIOS or a HDD password, there is no way you would have been able to format and reload Windows. If it's a Windows login prompt, then you did not format, or you are using a corporate or educational image to install. So, which of the above is it? A picture might help.

Nice catch, Rick. I'd missed that completely and you're spot on.

Pics and/or more info needed.

Or, if its not a BIOS password, and he did actually managed to format and reinstall, it could be some form of BIOS resident anti-theft software such as Computrace. AFAIK this would not prevent you from performing a N&P, but would immediately reinstall itself from the BIOS thus re-presenting a password dialogue before permitting access.

Have seen a few different machines with anti theft/security measures installed. None of them would let the machine be formatted without at least knowing the password. Certainly haven't seen all of them however, so perhaps....

hello

I have still has no luck with this , when at the logon screen if you press enter the screens says pasword incorect then it goes away.

and if you click the start orb it does it again but the number9 key presses itself and types 999999999999

weird

Huh?!

How are you seeing the start orb if you can't get past the password prompt? This whole thread confuses me. Forgive me if I offend, but how long have you been working on machines? As far as I can see, there has been no clear explanation of the problem, nor has there been any description of troubleshooting steps taken. What was the original problem with this computer? What was your recommendation to the customer? What have you done so far? Screenshots or pictures would help here too.

I've seen some strange password features being from an education background but I"m having trouble finding this one believable... Show us some sort of picture of what you're seeing.

Have you obtained the laptop for yourself or are you repairing it for someone? Ask the person you got it from for the password.

Is the password request coming up on a black screen or a Windows log-on screen?

Something is fishy about this whole thing. The lack of clear information about it, the utter lack of follow-up (OP is ignoring questions asked). This thread was started 10 days ago and the problem's not resolved?
