Hey all. I have a customer with a netbook who asked me to modify the wallpaper for Windows 7 Starter. I said it should be no problem (I assumed I could figure a workaround for the limitation built into starter edition).

After attempting to modify it sure enough I messed it up, now the wallpaper is just blank black (even after returning the original file back to the folder [%windir%/web/wallpaper/windows/]).

The key issue I think is that originally the file has the owner set to "TrustedInstaller". But now that the owner is the admin, no trustedinstaller option exists.

Has anyone else run into this issue? I just need to return it to the original wallpaper and will be happy.

Thanks for whatever help I can get!

It might be worth trying a system restore to a couple of days ago

I had thought of that but wanted to avoid it for some reason. Gave it a shot and it worked. Thanks for the advice (as obvious as it should have been).

Does anyone know how one might change the wallpaper on Windows 7 Starter without using a 3rd party program?

Direct from Microsoft:
Note

Windows 7 Starter edition comes with one desktop background, which can't be changed or customized.

3rd party apps appear to be the only way but good luck on finding one that works consistently! I tried a few with a client several months ago and none of them would work without having to rerun the software every reboot.

Upgrade to Home Premium!

Indeed. I just find it sad that Microsoft chose that as a restriction on any version of the OS. Even Windows 3.1 had the option to customize the wallpaper.

If Starter Edition really had its limitations for the purpose of system resource usage (e.g. Aero, transparent glass) which is the impression they give, then they should have set it to a solid color (which presumably could be customized). That way no image file has to be loaded for it.

Just sayin... :P
