Windows 7 Installation Troubles

I am trying to install Windows 7 over my xp system (yes, I know I'll have to do a clean install). The problem I'm having is when I first load the setup program. It tries to copy temporary installation files, but a message comes up that says it can not find a location to copy temporary files, and to ensure that a partition on my system has at least 686 MB of space to copy them to. I have more than enough free space to do so... Anyone run into this problem before?

Are you attempting to launch the setup from within the XP install or are you doing a boot installation? I would suggest going at it from a boot installation. I remember running across an issue with certain bios setups when attempting to run in an active system instead of booting to the install disc.

Like repairit said, are you trying to boot from the cd or trying to upgrade over your current OS? The latter isn't possible. You need to format your drive and proceed from there. You shouldn't run into any issues that way unless your machine doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

Is the old partition encrypted in some way? Assuming you were already booting (like the poster above said), this looks like the setup is missing the harddisk completely. Does the partition actually list when selecting your installation destination ?

The OP seems to contradict himself by saying he is trying to install over existing and yet also states he knows of the need for a clean install...makes no sense which is why I did not reply last night when I read this...but since others have I'll simply say everyone here has stated what should be done including yourself so why do you not do it the proper way?

What I thought he meant was that he was aware that the upgrade disk would force him to do a clean install rather than an in-place upgrade because he was on XP rather than Vista.

Use Hirens Boot CD to delete all partitions on HDD then boot with windows cd install and enjoy
