Here is my scenario:
A new client has a Windows 7 notebook and is getting a 'BootMgr is Missing - Press 'Ctrl/Alt/Del'.
I reseatted the drive. Same message appears.
I then removed the drive and slaved it to a bench machine.
When I Explore the drive I see a 'Program files' and a 'Program files (x86)' but no 'windows' or 'users' directories.
The client did say that just before the 'BootMgr is missing' message appeared he opened an Email from a friend which was not actually from his friend (virus?).
Any comments as to whether I am dealing with a virus or actual hardware / operating system corruption issue?
Thanks in advance.

Oh maybe the hidden files virus? It hides directories (usually it allows you to boot) and maybe recoverable..

Quick link to a repair for this http://www.callnerds.com/hidden-files-virus/
if in fact that is the issue..
How about D7?
I wonder if it can perform that function on a slaved drive successfully?
The 'Reset Hidden Volume' is on the 'Offline Ops' tab.
My big worry is that I did a backup but I am not sure that it backed everything up considering the problem.

Before I send this drive to OnTrack, I would appreciate some additional advice regarding the above post.
I slaved the drive off another computer and ran D7 - unhide files.
A message pops up that the volume is not a Windows volume (or something similar).
I ran 'UnHide.exe' as someone suggested above and still no sign of a Windows directory, users, etc.
I mounted in Ubuntu - same results.
I ran GetDataBack - same results.
Is it time to send the drive off to OnTrack?

virus isnt going to delete directories least not on purpose. may have messed with the mbr and the partitions though. I assume you've checked for hidden partitions and what not?
