[SOLVED] Windows 7 64-bit clean install - update problems

I did a clean install (using the recovery partition) of an Acer all in one last week. Client is now saying everytime you shut it down it says "configuring windows do not restart....." and gets stuck. There is no HD LED on this machine.

I have looked at it, done all the usual Windows Update Repairs and it still does it. I am now trying to install Windows updates, it says none have been installed and it just gets stuck. No HD LED so I cannot tell if it is doing anything. Task manager suggests not.

Any ideas? Getting quite frustrated with this.

MS Fix IT and D7 update repairs have not worked.

I suspect the system updates never did work, as the client was in a rush to get it back so I didn't have time to check this, normally I would make they all installed.

So systrem restore might not help. Noticed the software distribution folder does not exist, so there is obviously a problem.

Have you tried wsusoffline.net? Great for doing offline updates and has solved a couple of similar problems for me...

Thanks that is what I was looking for, I am trying the offline tool first though. I was googling the shut down problem rather than the fact updates were not installing hence I didn't find those links.

Trying to run checksur now, its taken 30 minutes so far and it just gets stuck.

I also did all offline updates, not made any difference.

I am thinking it will just be quicker to do another N&P, there is only 4gb of data on it.

I had a similar problem with an Acer Aspire. After wasting too much time I N&P and all is well. Not too sure if the recovery partition was corrupted but it worked nonetheless. Data recovered and updates installed.

Besides if you count up how much time you've spent trying to solve this issue, the N&P will be a lot quicker and save your bald patch

I have had an update recently that says its installed but next time you check it's back!! Something do do with certificates I think. I just hid it for now

I do remember when working on a personal XP machine one time that a windows update caused the machine to become unstable and blue screen a lot. I could never fix that, even reinstalling didn't fix it....

A N&P should fix it.....

Oddly enough this same thing happened to me a few nights ago on my workstation (core i7 930, 6GB RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit). It went for like half an hour seeming to do nothing so I just shut the machine off, powered it back up and its running fine. Haven't messed with it anymore yet. Working 60 hours a week will do that to you.

It drives me crazy you don’t know what’s happening if anything
This is what turned me off Macs and now I notice all the HP laptops are that way, if HP weren’t already bad enough.
