Win 7 networking probs. after virus

Glad you found the problem. No surprise here. I have run into this more than once. Can't believe it didn't come to my mind earlier. I hate McAfee with a passion!

Did the problem return when you reinstalled McAfee?

Seen this a lot with NORTON products and even AVG, never McAfee but not surprised at all. Will keep that trick in my head (always uninstall ALL A/V software when networking is botched after malware removal.) I always figured it was just the malware altering a core component of the A/V's firewall or settings which ends up breaking internet when the malware is completely removed.
 
Now that I think of it, we always uninstall the original AV (via removal tools) during the virus removal process. So, I have not seen this problem in a while. I know some of you guys are concerned about the customer not wanting us to do so, but here are my thoughts.

1. It usually just makes the process easier, especially for issues like this.
2. If we were to N & P, then we would have to get rid of it anyways
3. Obviously the AV did not work well and at that point it needs to be replaced anyways. Its a good time to sell your AV and protection package.
4. Even if the customer still wanted their software, you could have run a key finder before you uninstalled the AV.
5. Regardless of that, they should have this stuff backed up in a safe place, and then you can educate them on the importance of backup and sell them a backup solution. Of course this is not something that you would normally backup, but it just opens you up for that conversation anyways.

I usually uninstall the A/V during the course of malware removal as well so that's probably why I haven't seen that in a while either.

I do it mainly (and justify it to the customer, should they need to reinstall it) because the malware often cripples it in some way anyway and a reinstall is necessary for proper functionality.

But really I guess it depends on the infection whether I do it or not, but it sure makes cleanup a lot easier without A/V getting in the way. (Especially with some of my tools hehe.)
 
OUCH! We've all been there. Dont feel bad!

Purists will hate me for this, but the first thing I do if there are networking issues on a machine post malware-removal is to run this (free, Rizonesoft Internet repair)

9/10 times it solves the issue.

On the rare occasion it doesnt I spend the time doing the diagnostics, but from a time-saving standpoint it does the basic work with a few clicks. It will allow you to at least tick off some steps. From there, you might need to spend more time (or not).

But yeah, after that I would be booting to Linux and seeing if that worked, to at least determine more about the problem.

I also would say to run 2 passes with combofix.

This can help with internet errors too. Have you ran TDSS killer and checked for rootkits?
