WiFi and LAN connection issue

Okay having major connection issue with WiFi and LAN connection ever since disconnecting my TV service. We have Consolidated Communication dsl. Since we go rid of the TV service, they switched out our gateway for a modem and router combo. Ever since then my network has been garbage. Also my amazon fire stick won't even finish checking for updates, it worked fine before the new equipment. I am not the best when it comes to networking. What tests and diagnostic can I run to see what is going on. Modem is a Comtrend 5630u and router is a Netgear R6300v2. I do have access to router but no access to modem. I am trying to decide if I want to buy my own gateway and try that. But I figure I would come hear ask before purchasing the gateway.

Did you check to see what your service is provisioned for? If you dropped their TV service I could easily seem them shrinking your pipe as well. Hook up a machine directly to the Comtrend, configure, and run some speed tests using speedtest.net and internetfrog.com.

I have connected directly to the modem and speeds are decent. Bust once I connect to the router via WiFi or LAN speeds are horrible. I can't access the modem to configure it.

firmware update for that netgear?

Swap in a test router and see if you get the same behavior.

Turn off DHCP and WiFi on the combo modem / router so there isn't double NAT and general WiFi interference with your Netgear (unless your provider provided the Netgear and I mis-read that).

Maybe even just a simple reset of netgear and a fresh setup is in order (not sure what settings it may have retained from the previous setup - i.e., maybe you had manually set the gateway or the dns or the usable wan IP)...

just some thoughts.

Now going to see what
internetfrog.com.
is.

Are you putting a wireless router behind an ISP supplied gateway that's already a wireless router? Meaning..double NAT?
Or is your Netgear pulling the public IP?

The Comtrend 5630u looks like a modem/router combo to me, so if you are going to use another router for wifi it must be configured properly to avoid a double nat situation.

How has this reached post #10?

What have you tried since? Why haven't any of the suggestions made to date solve the issue?

I don't see anything in the specs that it has Wi-Fi.

Now that you linked it,even the product name has the word "router" in it...which is what I asked above.
So..it IS a router..and unless you went through the steps to "bridge" it...you are running double NAT. Further reading of that quick spec PDF states it's doing NAT, ans it has 4x LAN ports, has WAN to LAN bridging functions, all sorts of typical router in gateway mode duties.

Having wireless features does not mean it is or is not a router, "wireless" and "router" are two totally separate network services.

For testing purposes, log into your Nutgear and see what its WAN IP address is. Is it a private IP like 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x or 10.1.1.x or something like that? Or...is it a public IP address, such as the same one you'd see if you go to www.whatismyip.com?

Does the Comtrend gateway have a sticker on the back or bottom that tells you its default LAN IP and user/password?

What we want to find out, is if your Netgears LAN IP is in the same IP range as the Comtrends LAN IP. If the Comtrend is at 192.168.1.1 and the Netgear is also the same...you'll have a network that doesn't know which way to go? Anyone remember that old Bugs Bunny cartoon where the old sheepdog asks "Which way do I go George?"

And even if you find out they are on separate IP ranges ....you're likely still doing double NAT...which, you want to avoid. So your choices are, to reconfigure the Comtrend to run bridged (meaning it turns off its NAT and passes the public IP to the first DHCP request),,,,or you reconfigure your Nutgear to run in access point mode, instead of router/gateway mode. Which I can help you with if you find out info I'm looking for in previous sentences.
