User asked me to change the default PDF viewer to Edge rather than Adobe Reader.

Took a lot for me to not say a ward and just make the switch.

I stopped putting Adobe Reader on computers a few years ago, Adobe no longer has the tight grip they had on the rights for PDF files, all modern browsers open and view PDF files fine, even Microsoft Word can open, create and save PDF files.

One less 3rd party app to worry about patching too!

Add one more to the chorus of, "Avoid Adobe Reader at all costs!"

Edge really is an excellent PDF reader. I haven't been able to tolerate Adobe Reader DC for years now and for a standalone I use Tracker Software's PDF-XChange Viewer or FoxIt.

I prefer using Adobe to the Chrome PDF viewer I would have to look at the one built into Edge and other browsers to say there but since I need and use Acrobat Pro it is something I only look at on other users systems.

It's a double-edged sword. I do like the idea of simplifying and having one less program to update and maintain. But, when it comes to printing sometimes the browser setup makes it harder - I'm looking at you Chrome with your funky non-standard print bs.

Adobe Reader is still on every endpoint, patching is handled by winget and a script from my RMM.

Why? Because Edge SUCKS MONKEY BALLS at reading PDFs that aren't letter or legal papersizes. But also when you're dealing with compliance it's still the only reader that works with a bunch of the encryption features. Foxit does really well too, but it's not as easily updated via winget.

Which, in the grand scheme of things, unless you are in specialty pursuits, is a tiny minority of PDFs.

I also haven't experienced any difficulty with PDFs whose page sizes are smaller than letter, either.

Edge still is not my personal favorite, but for the kinds of PDFs that land in most peoples' laps most of the time, it works well.

This. Not doing Adobe is fine until you have a lawyer. Then it is not reader but full Adobe Acrobat.

Not just lawyers, but anyone in construction.

But I do agree outside of those fields, it isn't needed anymore. Still have a ton of offices that want it everywhere though, because when you have an endpoint that doesn't PDF well and Reader isn't just there... people get all sorts of grumpy!

And...once again (many times per year)...another big exploit with ABloatMe Reader ...the OS platform doesn't matter so both Windows ..CrApple.....and they stopped their *nix version a while ago.

Acrobat 23 means version 2023, as of March anyway.

Acrobat reader has been auto patching itself since 2010 or so if you let it... just did a check on my fleet and... look at that... 23.006 releases everywhere because they've already fixed themselves.

Eventually they patched..in time? Who the eff knows.
They've been averaging more than 1x exploit per week just this past summer alone...

We have a few law firm clients, luckily they don't use adobe much (actually none of mine do), their LOB apps handle PDFs internally...
Also our construction clients, most have got to much improved handling of PDFs from Bluebeam.

Fortinet has had a hard year too. Everyone has their turn from time to time.

Even if I want to take a shower acting as an apologist for Adobe... yuck, only company I think less of is Kaseya!

Edge for PDF is fine for ordinary users, especially if they're using Edge as their default browser. It's fast and less cluttered than Adobe.

I ask customers what browser they want as default, if it isn't Edge I install adobe reader otherwise they can get confused and start browsing with Edge after viewing a PDF.

I don't think Chrome is much good as a PDF reader is it?
