I am trying to remember the kit I purchased back in the 90's it came in a set with two BNC cards and a small roll of cable... I thought it was called easyLAN or something like that.

Yup Artisoflt LANtastic. Came in a purple box. A place I worked for back then used that for their networked point of sale software until I convinced then Microsofts native NetBEUI was fine for them with Windows 95/98 by then...and easy enough for them to support.

Prior to that...they used it in their DOS bootup disks...and even in the early Win95 days when I got there. Had its own protocol, some version of netbios.

It's easy to forget how difficult networking used to be.
I haven't forgotten. I remember spending days trying to get things like Lantastic working on my dodgy 80386 desktops.

We like to complain about stuff when it doesn't work. People relate with dismay how they sent an email or sms that was never received. I politely inform them that delivery is not guaranteed, ever. You take it for granted because it nearly always works. And then one day it doesn't and our whole world comes crashing down around us.

I'm continuously amazed by the apparent miracles modern technology comes up with: networking, wifi, cell phones etc.. I still remember the absolute joy of DESQview when I was running my BBS.

"... but you try and tell the young people today..."
