Edit: went with the long screws and there’s been no issues.

Got a Vizio PX65-G1 65" TV and a SANUS VLT6 wall mount.

TV comes with M6 x 14mm screws in the VESA wall mounting holes. Manual says NOT to use them - use the ones that come with the wall mount.

Choices: M6 x 12mm or M6 x 35mm.

The 12mm seems too small and while the 35mm do fit, I worry about them busting through the screen.

Thread the screws in the back of the TV finger tight and see if they go in flush or if there is still a bit of screw sticking out when tightened down. If there is , go to the next shortest length screw or use washers for spacers between the screw and mount to keep them from bottoming out in the tv inserts. As long as the shorter screws go in 4 or 5 threads they are usually fine. Most modern TV's have closed inserts so you don't have to worry about going through the screen, just be careful and hand tighten for initial fit only. I hope this helps

From Reddit:

How much thread is available to screw into the tv? The 35mm long screws are generally used in conjunction with spacers for TVs with a curved back.

That's some bulls#it right there. Why would the manual for the TV tell you not to use the screws included with the TV? Somebody must have screwed up (pun intended) and included the wrong screws, or more likely, they got sued when some idiot cross-threaded them and his TV fell off - haha.

Sanus (wall mount company) says: "You will need to determine that - it needs to be long enough for 2-3 tight turns."

The easiest way to find out what screw will be too long is to unplug the TV and then take a toothpick and insert it into the hole for the mount on the back of the TV, mark it and then pull it out and measure it. This will tell you what the maximum length that the screw can be. Be sure to measure all of the holes as they can be of different lengths.

That’s smart.

I just went with the long screws and there’s been no issue.

Solved.
