Whats the best legal rout to go with purchasing Windows to install on number of customers PC's?

I'm just getting into the PC repair field. I work as a helpdesk tech in northen Indiana and with my spare time repair PCs on the side.

Any help you can give is much appreciated thank you.

Ebay. My distributor has volume licenses but it's hard to beat ebay.

Tigerdirect.com usually for me.

or Ingram Micro

I'm to paranoid to buy from ebay, and take the risk that someone copied the license# down and used it later on down the road after I already sold the license to a end client.
Last thing I want is "My computer says I have been a victim of piracy!!!"

It might be a few bucks more than a discount shop or ebay, but after seeing first hand how quick someone can be suspect of OS piracy with the big boys, its not worth it...FAR from worth it. That kind of branding will stay with you for a long time. You may be innocent, but most clients wont remember that you got cleared, just that you were indited..and the damage will be done.

I'm sure it doesn't happen every time, but it only takes once to trash a career.

Pray tell us more about these PCs you want to install XP on?

You could get into all sorts of difficulties (with clients) installing onto unsuitable old machines or new ones that have no XP drivers.

Always, but always, consider the drivers before wasting effort on intallation.

On the other hand if they are big name (Dell etc) that had XP aned you simply need to reinstall than get a copy of the OEM disk and change the licence to that of the COA on the case.

I have never had real trouble activating one of these after a genuine reinstallation.

you can also just always buy vista business edition OS with the new computers, and downgrade it. Ive never found any that didnt have XP drivers, I think it may be a prerequisite for the business on OEM. Dont quote on that though.

This is a very very good point! Always check the system before installing Windows XP most of the time you can get away with it and grab the drivers from the mainboard manufacturer but still be warned it might be more hassel than its worth!
