What's the best tablet for reading PDF's & books?

I want to get a tablet for reading books. It would be great if I could watch movies and surf the net as well, but not necessary. An SD slot would be great.

I want to be able to read PDF's for sure.

I just saw the new Nook HD and it was beautiful! I've used a Kindle fire which isn't as big as the Nook HD, but still nice. I was also thinking of the Nexus if that is even in the same league.

What can you all recommend?

They all read PDFs. Nexus has a small screen and no SD slot.

I prefer a dedicated device for ebooks, and for me, the Nook Simple Touch is the way to go. I love the crisp e-ink display (no backlight on mine though if you read in the dark, but they do have a newer model called "Glowlight" that provides this), great battery life, and is able to handle epub format. I use the whole Nexus line. I use my Nexus 10 at home for most of my pleasure surfing. It is really good for reading Flipboard. I also like using it for reading technical PDFs. Both the Nexus 4 and 7 are retina at $229 and $399 respectively. I have an ipad that I never use. I'm sold on the whole google experience. Neither of them meet the expandable storage requirement. I don't store movies or music on them so it doesn't bother me.

For reading books I would trade nothing for my Kindle Paper White.

Potentially dodgy territory, but I believe it is possible to flash some nooks into full blown android tablets (albeit slow, and waving goodbye to any supportable warranty).

+1 for Nexus and Kindle. Wife uses her KindleFire HD 24/7 it seems, and I never see it being charged, but that screen is always glowing.

The current nooks are full tablets. They have full access to the Google play store app.

I understand one can root a Kindle Fire to a pure Android device. Anyone done it or know of any good guides for the linux-impared like me?

Edit: I think I've found the answer: N2Aos, where they will do it for you remotely for $19.95.

I have a Nook color that I rooted to CM10. I use my Kindle app and BN app on it for books, plus as a full android tablet. For a 100 bucks you cant beat it.

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to have my Kindle Fire rooted, as almost everything I go to buy in the Kindle App store requires a US-based credit card/address.
