Customer brings in a SONY VAIO laptop with a black screen. Ok, what model is it ? Customer doesn't know. Lets try to find out:

Well nothing on the top but the words SONY VAIO

Nothing on the bottom but a Windows 8 sticker. I guess they didn't want
to ugly up the machine with the model number but the stupid Windows 8
sticker was ok ?

No model info on the palm rest or the LCD trim or anywhere

Wait, whats this "release" switch do ?

Flip it to unlock and nothing. But if you pry the LCD bottom
away from the back (for some reason) a magnet releases and it flips up at the
middle of the screen.

Well, there's the tag, underneath the LCD at the bottom. Makes
perfect sense to put it there.

Of course the tag does not tell you its a Sony Vaio Flip 14 A, you have to
enter the long model number into google to come up with that info.

If you get one of these, the following youtube video shows you where they hide the other screws so you can open the bottom.
This one is a little tricky because they hide screws under the feet AND under a very thin rubber line.

LOL!!! I'm been working on my Vulcan mind meld so that might have helped. Seriously. For about 3 years I did onsite warranty work for Sony laptops. Hands down the worst designed laptops for R&M for the most part. Makes Apple stuff look like child's play.

It is making crap like that forced them to pull out of the PC business. I really don't know where Sony has gone wrong but 15 years ago they were simply the best consumer level brand you could buy for many things. They never made high end things as such but if you wanted a decent amp or a CD player you could never go wrong with a Sony. Then they made some great phones but again lost the plot.

I always felt their laptops and desktops were over priced for what you got though.

I am pretty sure they have pulled out of the HI-FI separates market now too as it is now a niche market, there was no place for a "we are average at everything" brand like Sony.

Actually, its More like Sony lost a ton of money and sees profitability in other areas, presumably sponsoring and financing thought provoking films about totalitarian regimes. Though, to be fair, Sony build quality has gone downhill dramatically the last few years, though I saw no shortage of people shelling out insane money for them. Sony is not the first, nor will it be the last that pulls out of the PC market.
