Why is it that whenever I'm in a forum and someone asks what music people listen to, the ones that respond always post some really off the wall music that nobody has EVER heard of except that guy.

Have you tried going to Pandora.com? Pandora let's you create custom radio stations based on songs that you like. Try it out. I've discovered a lot of new bands that way.
