I'm looking for a good free cd ripper that will also convert to MP3.

What are your favorites and suggestions?

Also, I know there used to be debate about VBR vs CBR (variable bit rate vs constant bit rate) and some devices didn't handle them as well. VBR usually results in smaller files but I want the best compatibility.

Thoughts?

I use MediaMonkey . It is my main music player, and handles large music databases very very well. Loads quicker than iTunes even if it doesn't have any songs in the music db. Very quick Audio Ripper, can do many more formats than MP3 as well. And I've never had a problem playin' back anythin' that I've ripped using MediaMonkey. And there is so many scripts for MediaMonkey to deal with ID3 tags for MP3 files.

I have 100,000+ mp3s in my collection, and took me 3 hours to fully tag all the ID3 tags to my standards.

Well worth checkin' out IMO, I'd give it 5 stars and two thumbs up.

I worked on someones libary with 144,000 it was over 700 gigs and it would have taken me a week to sort through that so I doubt you have that many and Im sure they aren't all on the up and up.

You can keep your doubts to yourself ;) Don't really care what you think ..

I could turn around and say 'i doubt your a technician, why you on this forum?' . But I don't know you from a bar of soap, so I'm not goin' to 'doubt' anything you've said, just give the benefit of the 'doubt' :P

Back on topic...

About 98% of them are tagged correctly; the others I ripped from mates MP3 CD's that they bought round when we were drinkin' and I ripped them while I played them, so they are listed as Unknown1, Unknown 2 etc etc...

If my tower was working I'd post a screenshot just to rub ya face in it :)

My mum purchased a new laptop last week, and a cheap-o MP3 player that looks like an IPOD SHUFFLE, but isn't. She used Windows Media Player to rip all her Audio CD's and then tried to put them on her MP3 player. But her MP3 player on plays MP3's, not WMA's like some MP3 players play .. Anyone know of a good batch converter from WMA to MP3?

She was considering re-doing the whole lot, but I told her I'd find a good converter for her to save her time, and a headache
