What should I do about my job..?

So I work at a repair shop as a tech, theres another main tech.. apparently hes my manger.. hes on a payroll of i'm guessing $18 an hour, but he does everything from dcjacks to onsites

i do most of the things he does, and apparently the boss thinks im better than him in electronics and has me repairing most things like him as well, and odd things like iphone unlocks and such..

anyways i work part time, only friday and saturday because of school (winter session) right now, but i'll probably work less or not even at all during spring, as im taking 1 class, but in spring im taking 3,4 and math and chemistry included at a college level so its nothing i can just sit and use logic about..

i get paid only $10 an hour, and honestly.. im sick of the BS at work.. if the main tech screws up, im forced to spend hours and hours, sometimes even take work home, but honestly, i know i'm getting underpaid, and taken advantage of..

we don't even have proper tools,the tools that are there, are little made in china rip offs and things, we don't even have a proper solder! so many times i had to work sniffing up ESD
i expanded the lab ALOT by putting up all kinds of things like shelves and wall mounting monitors cause its so damned messy there..

the thing that pisses me off most is the getting taken advantage of part.. the boss tries to make it seem like hes paying me enough, that the company is a family blah blah blah... hes even trying to convince me to change my major to computer science to benefit him in the future:rolleyes:

the guy is a total nazi, but alot of bosses are who are just money hungry..

lack of breaks and lunch has probably caused me to getting an stomach ulcer... which really sucks, and the pay sucks so i really hate spending it for basic things like water and stuff

company has problems everywhere, but most of the revenue would probably be from laptop repairs and stuff OS reinstalls, but my manager and boss keep pushing me about universal imaging, i mean im working as fast as i can but they keep pushing and pushing obviously because its going to generate ALOT more revenue..
I thought about this and said if i develop this, i better get a damned raise.. they said okay.. but only if i make universal systems for like every windows OS out there.. i suggested something like a FOG deploy server.. they just shrug and tell me to set it up..

I know pretty much how to, but it takes times as i have things to repair, and have a ton of projects.. he sends me to setup CCTV where i have to use my own ladders and drills :rolleyes: which i still get paid crap..

but i need a job, and schedule is pretty flexible.. but i still think its BS

so im thinking of just giving them a windows 7 universal image since its easiest to do, and just saying oh i can't get the files i need for other images or something because I know its going to generate alot more revenue for them, and honestly.. i don't think they deserve it..

the boss constantly calls me, even when i'm in class to give me more and more projects.. research this and that.. like come on man.. im at school, and i like having a social life.. and give me some tools, and let me rest.. :mad:

my girlfriend says honestly just get a new job.. cause their taking advantage, and your not supposed to give all your secrets and tricks away to people like that (unless its my career)
(i don't even have a car right now because i crashed :() and i help out with the bills.. my mom's restaurant closed and shes in all kinds of debt and shes basically providing the roof over head, but living check to check but usually she gives me no money for school or food or anything, and i do pay for myself, my gf, sometimes for my mom.. but it gets annoying..

as fellow techs im sure you guys have been pushed and felt trapped because of so many things going on, etc
so what do you guys think i should do?

2. You listed a lot of things you are unhappy with ... You know your situation better than anyone else ... Taking everything into consideration you have zero solutions for yourself setup here. So you quit ... Then what? Your unemployed and then what? You can't help your mom, you aren't making money to buy a new car and you can't afford college and then what?

I ask your age because I have been in your shoes ... Thought I was the smartest tech in town and I DESERVED more money, I took a step back and really reanalyzed myself and found my situation wasn't all that bad. I got flexible hours ... I got to do something I enjoyed, and i got to further my skillset with all kinds of different technology and I got to goto school when I wanted.

If you don't feel challenged at work then you are doing it wrong. Its your job to get the job and its your employers job to keep you interested in it. It's not all about money, and stop worrying about other people. Focus on bettering yourself for yourself. Do a good job for yourself first and foremost. Worrying about what your boss or your manager does or makes is a quick way to get yourself canned. And by the sound of your situation if you get canned you are **** up a creek.

Don't let people get in your head telling you "oh you are so awesome you should just open your own company" its not as easy as it sounds and there are tons of things you have to do as your own boss you can't even think of or comprehend without diving into it. I spent 3 years as a junior tech and 7 as a senior before I went on my own. Know your role ... Learn as much as you can while you have the flexibility you have because although I've never been happier being on my own it is my no means mentally or physically easy to do this on your own.

Good post, we can read your frustrations. Here is a bit of advice. Figure out what your value is an hour, based on your tech skills. Then finish your project, prove it works and the approach the boss with your offer of a raise and why you are worth that raise (meaning, how you save them money, how you raise their revenue, how you are saving all the techs time, how you are useful for back end research, etc). Be professional and give him an outline of why you're worth the raise in writing--write it all out! Don't just rattle off why you are the rock star. Tell him that you would like him to review it and get back to you.

Since it seems they are holding this project over their head for a raise, do the work and earn the raise the right way. Then you kind of have something over them, that should secure your raise. I get what you're saying, you probably feel they won't give you a raise and you earned it, but you are also doing their project on the clock, and he is paying you for that time to figure out the images. So, you might not win...but if you show the boss in writing how $ is in his pocket, it might help.

Also, I wouldn't worry about the rest of the stuff you can't control. Not worth your time at this point. It's a college job and from my experience, we all had crappy college jobs and crappy jobs out of college! LOL.

Can't change everything, sometimes we just have to deal with the things we don't like.
 
Get certified. Go to school at night for it or do it during school. Once you get your certs find another job.

My experience has been that big companies will just use you until your burnt out. Then they discard you. But if you have certs or whatever you can pick and choose.

Just learn as much as you can while you are there and keep looking for other employment.

+1 to that. At this point, you may be quite an asset to your current employer, but don't push it. Also remember, that you are NOT an asset to anybody else untill you have more experience and/or certifications. Burning your bridges will not help. One must always strive to leave an employer on good terms AND not leave current employer until they are ready, in every respect.

i never stated that i'm the best or i wouldn't be on this board :P

thanks for your inputs guys and coffee your right, they burn me out, and then bother me on my time off so i guess it was getting to me.. we average 350 customers a month, and 500 during peaks

but the boss is a cheap... he won't buy any tools unless we have to "send it somewhere else"

and the computerguy i guess thats true, its just the fact that i know im getting ripped off so i was just thinking man do i really want to give something away for the near future i won't be in..

callthatgirl your right thats what they are doing, and im sure after that their going to have much more..
my last job i averaged 220 a day (valet parking for celebrity and rich folks rocks) :P
do i was super frustrated as they just had things over my head

thanks for the input guys i guess i needed a good rant and a reality check..

Agreed. People come here for advice and help. We are a professional and helpful community, lets keep it that way.

I agree with coffee and callthatgirl. Always have goals and work towards them, be the best you can be and with those accomplishments you'll be able to find 'enjoyable' work. :)

Sometimes people don't need positivism. While the response was terse, I think it offered perspective, albeit in a "short" manner.

This is key. Do the project to the best of your ability with the time and resources you have available. I realize you're blowng off some steam, and it's tempting to do a "good enough" job, but if you want to convince your boss that you're pulling in money and deserve a raise, do it right. Set up the imaging system properly, work up a proper business case showing how much money this project is going to make for the company, and base your raise demand on that. In fact, do that for all the issues you mentioned. How much money are the shop's crappy tools costing him? How much rework are the poor procedures causing? Show him the money he's losing, and how you can get it back.

Also, if you're working part-time, but they're calling you in class and acting as if you're on call, you need to put a stop to that. The key is to be professional. Don't wallow in a victim mentality, but don't lose your temper, either. Just calmly and realistically assess the the situation. If you're supposed to be working two days a week, then work two days a week. Let your boss know that you'll give your best when you're on the clock, but you can't be on call while attending school.

And, if all that fails, you may just have to find another job. Don't bad-mouth your previous employer, update your resume with your experience and successes, and move on.
 
Don't mean to be harsh ... but why would you stay at a place like that?

Tell the owner your feelings (in a calm mature way) and be prepared for one of three outcomes:

  1. You get fired
  2. You quit
  3. You get respect and a raise

The likelihood of #3 happening is slim to none.

If your comeback is that you need the money .... then shut up and deal with it. :eek:

Your schooling will be over some day and you can chalk this up to a fantastic experience ;)
 
my 1st job IT job was making 9.60 an hour I took a pay cut because i wanted to work in the field that bad.

I know make quite a bit more then that, have a house, and a wife that can stay at home with the kids and needing to work.

it seems like the place is a great way to get experience but i will agree with you 10 bucks is cheap for a tech but in todays world people are just begging for work

hang tough, but like others said you know if you can do it or not
 
Well its obvious from your comments, you are so smart you should just start your own company and then you can make the $100 per hour that you are worth. Don't let that guy who risks his lifes savings take advantage of you after all at 20 you have allot into this thing.

OK i did a quick highlight of your rant, and it sounds to me that you are the typical "i know everything college kid". Im sorry but you need to wake up and realize your at the bottom of the chain. In this economy you should be grateful that you have a $10/hr job. If you ever want to succeed in life you need to drop that damn ego because no company would want someone like you, your a cancer to your co-workers with all that damn whining you do. I could probably go one for about 2 pages as to why I would never hire you but I wont, I just hope you wake up and appreciate the opportunity you have to learn the business and then maybe one day you will have your own company and you can deal with the "I know everything kid"
 
Hey bud- I'm 26 and was in your shoes quite a few times. I have had quite a few jobs so far, and now just recently started my own company. If you are 20 years old, these experiences are actually a good thing even if they suck!

It sounds like you are either short-term frustrated or are ready to find a different job. If you have a list of things you don't like about your job, and pay is one them, more pay won't fix it (or at least the kind of "more pay" that is reasonable.)

I used to CNC program and did some interviews at different companies. If I walked in and the machines were messy with a puddle of oil under them, I knew that I wouldn't work well with the management. A clean shop with well kept machines, even if they were OLD, meant I would be happy there.

Start looking for another job. When you find one, give a 2 weeks notice and leave on good terms.
