hello. i have a lenovo e431 that will not start unless i disconnect the battery and perform a power drain. on other units, that's all that needs to be done and they work, but on this one, once i restart, it goes right back to not booting, black screen and no beeps. i've also let the battery run out naturally and once i hook up the a/c, it'll boot once, but the minute i reboot, it goes right back to a black screen & no beeps. is it the battery? the MB battery? what needs to be replaced?

thanks!

i just spoke with the client and they say they've already changed the battery and it didn't help. what could be causing the need to power drain in order to boot?

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH TECHNIBBLE.

We used to be a great group of people helping each other. Now it seems many want to get their barbs in every time someone asks something. I wish we were as bright as some of the others think they are. Come on folks - it's not even fun following Technibble anymore because of this.

My guess is the MB but you could try swapping out the memory just to eliminate the possibility.

@add - I had a desktop come through with an Asus MB in it that did this. It would boot once and then nothing. I would move the RAM to a different slot and it would boot only once again until I moved the RAM back or to another slot and then it would boot again - once. Replaced the MB and all was good.

thank you for the help. i also want to apologize to the community that i was drawn into a childish response by the 'expert' who decided to goad me instead of offering assistance.

diggs -- you were right on about possibly the RAM. it turned out to be MB damage along the System Management (SMBus) signals, as the battery AND memory share the same signals.

Guys can we please keep community flowing in the way we are and were initially.

IF a member asks for assistance, and you can offer some, feel free to do so, or simply do not reply to the thread in question. There is no need for childish remarks.

Thank you.

an intro immediately followed by a 'how do i...?' is what ALL tech forums are all about. poor etiquette? these parts must be a very, VERY special place with the finest, nicest techs EVER.

anger and belittlement have NO place in this kind of place.

The issue is... That is what and how end users do things and we DO NOT help end users.
poor etiquette?
This forum is sorta a private members only club and the idea is to join and let us get to know you and hopefully you are able give or at least show us you are not just another end user before you take and just ask for help. That is why there is a post count and waiting period here for the more private areas of the forum. Gives us an opportunity to "evaluate" and weed out unwanted end users.

i am an old tech who began loving pc's when dos 4 turned the world on it's ear. i've always used forums like this to figure out how to fix something i can't. i've never been able to stomach condescending answers that are thinly disguise pleas for help. if i could help a user, i would. if not, i'd move on without giving a childish, snarky post. i had no idea there was a waiting period to get help or get weeded out. i followed the rules provided.

today, we live in a world run by people who love to hate. i always thought a tech forum was just that: a tech forum. i've never run across one with secret handshakes, or i'd be a freemason.

much thanks to kraken for his assistance. this thread can be closed.

@berbes I still use DOS to this day if it wasn't for PC Magazine disks of goodies I wouldn't be where I am today, I make it a challenge to try new apps / tools even find a new website to add to my collection, we're not at the point yet where we can just hook ourselves up to a machine and learn everything like in the matrix as for the delay in accessing certain areas and requirements is to make sure that spam bots and users that are not or the same caliber as Technibble guidelines .. and lets face it some programs I would define as a loaded shotgun if you don't know how to use it you might end up injuring yourself or someone else.

Anyways welcome to the place.. as for the Freemason I'll go back wearing my tin foil hat.

lol. a discussion of how microsoft ruined things would take most of today. as you pointed out, resources like youtube teach just enough to injure ones self. in my small business, i would describe myself as a tech utility infielder; i know some things on a lot of different levels, but not everything about one thing. with my diminishing faculties, i try to flush all unneeded knowledge.as soon as i don't need it. that and gravity make for some interesting days.

thank you for the welcome :).

My post wasn't intended to be childish or overly snarky sorry your sensibilities were offended truly. My post WAS a normal use of sarcasm intended to highlight for the people who SHOULD care, that a self described old tech with professed 12 years experience was asking an end user level question. Shocker but there have been some pretty crafty end users who have infiltrated the forums in the past. Last I checked this site is not marketed or run as a general help tech forum it is for business owners and employees of tech businesses and has in the past been fairly exclusive to those ideals. Please see the sergeant at arms in the back for the secret handshake and induction robes. :P
