What do YOU say on your answering machine message?

Hey guys & girls,

I've got an answering machine via my toll free number that people hit when i'm not available to answer the phone. I'm thinking i can improve the script i say on there. I wanted to get your input as to what you say, so people leave a message and actually wait for you to callback.

Right now, i'm dealing with people who 1. Don't even leave a message or 2. Leave a message, but then call someone else up. By the time i get back to them, it's too late.

Interestingly, most calls i get are in the morning, and people seem to just want instant resolution to their problems... as in, someone that day, that hour, or they'll just find someone else. Quality of work seems to be less of an issue.

When stuff is broken, you are right. Speed is all that matters. You really need to answer the phone, or have someone answer the phone. When we can't answer the phone, our system rings our answering service.

A couple of things come to mind. People will wait within reason if you come recommended by word of mouth or website testimonial. If I'm out all calls to my landline get diverted to my mobile at a cost of 25p. If I'm busy it goes to message and my message is like the previous one quoted. Don't leave it too long to ring back, if possible slip out to make the brief call.

I've got my text number listed as part of the message. I get to many hang ups but more an more people will leave a txt message when they would otherwise just hang up.

This is recorded with a light hearted manner, which seems to work ok for me.

We answer our phones 24 hrs a day so hopefully it doesn't go into the service much unless the battery dies or out of range for some reason.

But we say "you have reached Computer Fix It, please leave a message and we will call you right back."

People tend not to leave voice-mail messages as they want to speak to a real person. So I use an answering service, which works out about £1 per message, which is emailed to me.

The trick is is to get back to them as soon as possible, before they find someone else.

And then, you need to actually get to them asap, as some people have the audacity to fix their own problems!
