Monitor -
Flux: http://www.stereopsis.com/flux/
Ever notice how people texting at night have that eerie blue glow?
Or wake up ready to write down the Next Great Idea, and get blinded by your computer screen?
During the day, computer screens look good—they're designed to look like the sun. But, at 9PM, 10PM, or 3AM, you probably shouldn't be looking at the sun.
F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.

It's even possible that you're staying up too late because of your computer. You could use f.lux because it makes you sleep better, or you could just use it just because it makes your computer look better.

Multiple Monitors -
Multimon Taskbar: http://www.mediachance.com/free/multimon.htm

Sometimes you need to type in the path of a file or a folder or maybe just a filename. Sure, you can go to the Address bar in Windows Explorer, copy the text, go to your document and paste it. Of course, if you also need the file's name, you have to start the rename process, copy the name, escape out of the rename, then go to your document and paste it in.

Ok. I'll bite. I think I'll just add a list of current 'pet' software, rather than list everything - that way will avoid duplications and keep it short :)

Browser: Palemoon
I am a Firefox nut - have been for many years. Anyway, I came across this recently. Its basically firefox on amphetamines. I did some testing, and its a bit quicker. It also installed easily, taking on all my firefox customisations from my profile folder. Im very happy with it. Its quick and looks/works no different from my ff install, but faster.

Addons-
Autopager is probably one of the most useful addons Ive ever seen. There are heaps more on my machine but the others are all in common useage and thats the only one I want to give a shout out for. Autopager rocks.

Backup/sync
Karens Replicator - to automatically back up files from one disk to another. I tried a lot of file sync tools and had never heard of this one until I read a thread on another 'geek' forum where lots of people were raving about it. Its a 'no crap' program. Lightweight, does what its meant to, no nag acreens, reliable. I dont know its there because it runs in tray. Just does what its meant to, reliably and quietly.

For online backup I use ADrive - which offers 50gb free storage. I also use IDrive, which has less storage but has a sync tool.

Desktop
I use a combination of rainmeter and rocketdock. I had always avoided desktop gadgets in the past because of their utilisation of system resources. Recently I got a farily powerful computer so thought I might have a play with some to see what they offered. I like the additional useability. Both are very lightweight.

Search (windows)
'Everything' is a MUCH faster solution to windows indexing that doesnt tax during non-search operations. Everything is fast, takes less system resources than Windows search, and 'just works'. Results are instant (literally) with no 'this is going to take forever in non indeced locations' crap. This one's definitely worth a look if you have a lot of files on your machine, regularly do searches, and dont like to wait :)

Torrent Search
After years of using meta-search websites, Ive switched to using a local app to do torrent searches. Bit Che is a fairly muscular way to locate torrents across multiple sites (it can search about 100 at a time). I particularly like that if its a poorly seeded torrent, its possible to fine a 'best' seeded copy because so many sites are indexed. Works well. Plays nice with private trackers like Demonoid too.

I have heaps of software on my machine but these are the apps I wanted to give a plug to.

Boy mines a shorter list.

OpenSUSE 11.2.

Its funny how you have to install so much extra stuff in Windows. lol :D

Its funny how you have to install so much extra stuff in Windows. lol :D

You don't. All the stuff that is listed, Windows does. People just have a preference to use something else.

I love linux, but that statement was just completely wrong.

edit: My statement was wrong also, Windows does not include a native Torrents Search Client.

yeah cmon linux people. You can't get either of those distros and have the functionality outright that OP is talking about. Perhaps re-read the original post because there is no OS available that will do what he's got his set up to do 'off the shelf'.

I think its fair to say 'windows vs Linux' is squarely in the same ilk as 'mac vs pc', 'nvidia vs ati' (and plenty of other garbage IT debates) that are issues of "personal religion" and are unlikely to take the conversation anywhere particularly useful.

Lets keep it real, and on topic eh?

You lost me. Everything he posted in the OP can be done by default in both Windows and Linux (except the Torrent Search app. To be fair, maybe not all Linux distros either as I am sure a router distro won't need firefox or any browser at all).

The difference is usually all the default apps in Linux are made by different companies, well groups of people. My Ubuntu comes with Evolution for mail, which isn't created by the Ubuntu people and Firefox which is from Mozilla. Microsoft makes all of the built-in features and applications of Windows. The OP didn't have to install any of those applications to use their system, they just chose to, and Windows comes with default applications to do all of that stuff. Same with Linux. I don't like gedit so I install a different text editor, boy, I wish Linux came with usable applications...

As for wimwauters, installing packages is installing applications, so you can't say you don't install anything.

edit: my post is wrong, I was thinking the OP was a different post. However, many of the things that the real OP posted can be done by default in Windows.

You know your right.

My *nix distro does not come with everything I use.

I install conky so i can have my system stats on my background and I install crossover office so I can run office 2003.

Other then that and the exception of maybe the logmein plugin in firefox. Thats for the most part it.

O yeah I install the Nvidia drivers to.

:D

Please note:
I was running iMacros for Internet Explorer and was causing it to crash. I use Internet Explorer for logging cases on a daily basis. Sure, you can use IE Tab/Coral IE Tab for Firefox, but the Coral IE tab, for example flickers way too much. The guy who originally developed IE Tab for Firefox is no longer developing it. I do know there is a transition for another person to pick up the torch..

IE Tab 2 (FF 3.6+)

Otherwise, I use Firefox/Chrome..

Are the other alternatives for Macro-based software for Firefox..

Thanks,

Kent
