i learnt to board solder buy buying one of those electronics kits from maplin and sitting for 2 hours soldering like 100+ components the only thing i cant solder is small things like surface mount resistors

Was just after your opinions on this:

Wow i havent seen a solder job like that in a long time.

I actually saw one like that this weekend... the customer tried fixing it themselves and began melting the case b/c they didn't take the motherboard out.

We had one of those last year. Customer said the unit had the jack fixed 6 months before but was broken again.

As I disassembled the unit I saw a couple of melted plastic spots on the bottom edge of one of the small covers. Upon removing the cover I could clearly see the bottom of the jack. What it appears is that the last "tech" saw the jack pins and decided to just reheat the posts to flow the solder and hope it would fix it. He had probably slipped and melted the case in a couple of spots when he did that. Reflowing the solder sometimes works but it usually fails within a few months because of contaminants or simply not enough solder to begin with.

That is nasty. That makes me a cringe but I'm a neat freak as I used to be a pager and cell phone tech and had to solder much smaller components and couldn't make a mess.
