What are your hours of operation?

I wasn't exactly trolling.... I was just trying to point out that there's no reason to try to say she has a "shop" or a "work bench". (hence, "grandiose") It's equally silly to say that she's "open" 24x7, because she's not. Most of us would probably work at any necessary time, if we had to, but that's not in the spirit of the question.

If I were in Lisa's place, I would have said something like "I take calls from 10AM - 8:30PM" or whatever. Saying "24x7" is neither helpful or truthful, really...especially when she "doesn't answer the phone at 2:30am"

As far as downplaying expertise...give me a break! Where did I do that?

You do realize you're a complete ass, right?

Our plan for the rest of the year is to have a technician 'on-call' Saturday from 10-4 (our current hours). If someone has an emergency they can have someone out for about $100 premium (which will essentially go to the tech). If they don't want to pay that, we can schedule them for the following week. Same thing goes if someone needs to bring something to the office for a repair.

We'll also utilize our remote tools to work remotely should we have a number of systems in the shop that need to be serviced (check on scans, etc..). I'll re-post in a few months with an update.

Back on track.

8am to 9pm, Monday thru Friday. 9am to 5pm Saturday.

Two techs man those shifts. That doesn't count me. I do SMB help desk, marketing, business development and web development.

2 stores (3rd open soon due to acquisitions) open M-F 10am - 7pm, Sat 10am - 4pm, usually will answer the phones after that or before.
Use to be open at 9am, and may go back to that, but for now 10am does well.

We often stay open later to finish work or for phone repair, but it's random.

8:30 to 6:00 m-f, 10-3 sat. I think Saturdays are good for pickup and drop-off.

Ok, so for the people who own actual shops/stores, do you find being open BEFORE 9am (7-8 opening) is important ? Do you see a noticeable number of drop offs or pickups before 9am and then less from say 9am to 11am ?

I use to be open 8am - 8pm.... wasn't worth it almost 100% of my customers come during the hours we're open.... didn't really lose any to the competition per sey when we changed the hours.

Store Front:
M-F 9am-5pm
Sat/Sun Closed.

We are Mom and Pop shop - No employee's.
For the first 2 years we did 8am-6pm and Saturdays 10am-5pm.
After 2 years of this we changed hours to only M-F 9am-5pm.
We tested our area, and it really made no difference if we were open Saturday or not or before 9am. We found that the majority of customers who know us or were referred to us, will wait to have service done with us as we have built a solid reputation in our town for fast and efficient repairs.

I will say that we would like to stay open till 6pm to accommodate our customers leaving from work, but we have been doing these hours for about a year now and it has been working good. If customer calls us and needs us to stay till 5:30-6 for a pickup/drop-off we will stay. We will even schedule times on Saturday/Sunday to meet them here if they can't make it during our normal hours.

Happy Repairing All!

Well, I have decided. Starting November 1st we will be open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and closed Sat, Sun and all major holidays.

I looked back at the past year and decided most people who came in on Sat did it because we were not open early enough during the week or they were just asking questions or doing a drop off where they would not get an update until Monday afternoon or Tuesday, anyway.

On Dec 1st I will report back on how this turned out just for the heck of it.

How did it go Jimbo?

Wow, I completely forgot about this thread.

Moving to 8am to 6pm mon to fri was the best thing I did in years. First it gave me back my full weekends which allowed me a full day of rest and a full day of "whatever" which I haven't had in years. I now do MORE work improving my business on my "whatever" day because I can start and stop as I like and not worry about being open waiting for a tiny trickle of customers on a Saturday.

The 8am open also increased business, nobody around here is open before 10am so we get the early birds heading into work. Adding a new animated "OPEN" light on a window that faces the morning traffic rush has helped bring in more customers. When we opened at 9:30am most 9 to 5 people were already at work, but opening at 8am allowed most people heading into their 9am jobs plenty of time to come in an do drop offs or pick ups and still get their morning coffee before heading into work.

Since I am an early riser I used to sit around doing pretty much nothing until opening but now that I open earlier I use that early energy to do things and then I can take a mid morning break whereas before I was just getting fired up around 10:30am.

We just changed from M-F 8am - 6pm Sat 10am - 6pm
to M-F 9am - 7pm Sat 10am - 6pm

We were surprised to see and increase in business staying open one hour later has brought. I guess it just varies with location.

When I started back in 95 I did not do onsite. Strictly drop off. Hours were M-F 10-8, Sat 10-5, Sun 12-5. That lasted about a year when I started to close on Sunday. I then dropped M-F hours to 10-6 after another year and kept Saturday hours the same. When we started doing heavy onsite back in the late 90's I dropped Saturday hours in the office but still worked Saturday as needed and still do to this day. I can't remember when I changed last but our hours are now M-F 9-5 officially. Our office assistant works 8-4. Depending on the client we will work all night and on Sunday if needed.
