I was in a computer store the other day and caught a glimpse of them installing Windows over a network.
They chose Network as the first boot device, the computer booted, got an IP and loaded up some login though the network. It then showed all the operating systems that were installed on the server PC (XP Home/Pro, 2000 etc..) on a DOS style menu. He chose one and it installed.

Any idea what application/tool/server program this could have been?

Possibly RIS (Remote Installation Services) part of Windows 2000/2003 Server.

I've found RIS hard to work with however. Another alternative is here: http://winner.windowsdream.com/winner.html

I haven't tried that, but since it doesn't require a server, and looks easier, I think I'm trying it when I get a chance. ;)

RIS isnt that hard to work with if you are used to microsofts build tools and PE kits. But most people arent, so I understand the need for alternatives. That being said, I had never seen Winner. I just read all the documentation for it, it looks interesting, and I like that you can send out any version of windows from any version of windows. I also like the drivers and software repository. I am going to play around with getting it setup on my local lan and testing it.
