Went gambling Sunday

I like to play blackjack (21) to blow off some steam. We have this small casino in Dawagaic, Mi that I like. I was there until midnight and at first I was down 100.oo . Ouch! But then started climbing up in winnings. A fellow on the otherside of the table played the "lucky" spot and won 1000.oo bucks!

Then, A bunch of Asian players sat down and one Asian girl could not help but comment on my logic of playing. She would comment "Your playing all wrong!". She spent a lot of time critiquing a lot of my moves. She would look at me and start shaking her head and roll her eyes. I would just smile back as I pulled in my winnings. The other players started to drop out and then it was just me and her. So, I started betting heavier and took some more chances. I actually was doing pretty darn good. What I was doing was keeping an eye on what cards the dealer was actually breaking on. If the dealer was showing a break card I would double down if I had anything good showing. I continued to win and she started just watching me play. Then she sat out and just started watching me play one-on-one with the dealer. This I rarely do as I tend to lose. But Sunday night I could do no wrong. She was eventually amazed at my winnings. LOL, She ran out of money eventually but still contended that I was playing all wrong. I then said to her: " All your friends ran out of money, You are out of money and I am up 465.oo. Just because they wrote a book with rules on how to play doesnt mean you should follow them religiously. In everything in life things do not always run the way you expect and you have to watch the table to get an idea of how its running. So, With that I would have to say that 'NO, I am not playing wrong - you are' ".

All in all, It was a very fun night

I didn't know whether I was waiting for the punchline of a joke or for boom-chicka-wow-wow to start playing in the background.

But it was even more unrealistic than anything I could have imagined - someone won money at a casino!

I used to count cards in BlackJack, very well, as a hobby.

but at the end of the day there's always some element of "luck" in
an individual scenario.

Skilled poker players can, over time, come out ahead and they usually do.

One hand of poker has an element of luck. You can sit down with the best
in the world and beat them at a single hand. Chances are, you'll never beat
them over the course of time.

Bank roll can be another factor. A player with a big stack of chips has an advantage
over someone who doesn't.


At any rate, I've played fairly seriously at points in my life. Mostly holdem, but a few
other games as well. Both hands and feet wouldn't be enough to count the amount
of times I've been told I play wrong. In the majority of those cases, I was the one
with the money in front of me. Most often I find people do that when they are getting
beat, they say that stuff out of frustration or pettiness. Tell me how wrong I'm playing...
while I count your money that's now my money.

I have hands where the pot is a few hundred dollars, and the person left in it with me is
telling me how wrong I'm playing while the hand is still going. When the cards come up,
they get irate and tell me how I never should have even stayed in the hand, how lucky
I got. It's all BS.... they get ****** when they lose money.

In the OP's case, I think it's more of a "I saw such and such a thing on TV, or online, or in a
book.... so it has to be the correct way of playing" type deal. Pro players make a killing on
selling "advice" to the casual weekend worrier. All you have to do is spend $30 on my book
and soon you won't be any better than you are right now... just $30 poorer.....

Funny, I never really bothered with those shows or courses on how to gamble. I just got a card once while in Vegas that basically showed how to bet when the dealer has certain hands Vs. you. I studied it a bit and learned everything else on my own.

I have also had people tell me that I shouldnt have taken a 'hit' as I stole their card (lol). They get really irate for some reason and blame me for their failed playing.

I find the game enjoyable and I never bet with money I cannot afford to lose. I am not a big better either. A large bet to me is anything over 10.00 bucks which is the minimum amount where I play. Sometimes I will bet more like 25 if the cards are leaning my way

One of my favorite plays is when the dealer has a 6 showing and I have two face cards. I will actually break them up. Dealer looks at me as I made some bad move and the other players think its silly. But if you are paying attention to how the dealer is doing during the game it does work.

Poker and blackjack are completely different. There absolutely is a right and a wrong way to play blackjack. The same is not true of poker. The op played wrong, and still won. That's all.

Just a lucky night, security has your face on recog now. I had a similar incident years ago ended up winnning 500.00 off of 50.00 lol. Walked away, was Blackjack needed to get some lemon ink an UV contacts

I was raised in a gambling family which is why I do not play very often any more. I was taught at a very young age to play by the "book" my games are black jack and craps. I have watched many, many high stakes plays. Mostly following the same "book" I can tell you without a doubt that over time, playing by the book you will still loose. So if doing things your way worked for you that night and you won and had fun then smile at the losers as you take your winnings.

Good job, it is a great feeling when you win. It matters not how you did it!

I grew up in a very conservative family. My father always cautioned us about gambling and did his best to provide a great role model for us kids. He did a very good job. Then there is me. I spent some of my childhood with my relatives. My Aunt and Uncle really enjoyed gambling. My early years visiting them are memories of sitting around a large oak table playing cards with money. Not me at that age but my parents, and aunt and uncle. I learned to play as I grew up and learned a lot of important lessons. One of the most important was that remember that gambling with money you cannot afford to lose is foolish and frowned upon. Also, know the rules and never think that you have to keep playing to win your money back. Look at gambling as a form of entertainment only.

So, This is what I do. @CompConfig , I agree totally with your post.

I look at it like this. My brother is ultra conservative. He is very successful in his business and vacations in Florida and takes many trips to here and there. I tend to look at these trips (although I have taken some myself) as something he likes to do. But when he criticizes my indulgence in gambling I remind him that that is my form of relaxation and that often I walk away with money instead of bleeding it on trips. But I do not see anything wrong in taking trips. Its just what turns you on.

Last Saturday nite I took my girlfriend with me to our little "Vacation place". When my parents ask what we are doing I tell them that there are some "Tables up in <city> that we are going to go look at". (lol). We did extremely well and I walked away with 900.00 bucks. But I played until about 2AM. I have kinda educated myself to make minimal bets (10.00 per hand at the table) and never exceed 25.00 on a bet. Although in extreme situations I have done 50.00 on 'doubling down' or 'splitting my hand'.

It got quite interesting that night. You see, You meet quite a few colorful people at the table and I am not shy of talking business and handing out business cards. Had one guy at the table betting as much as 200.00 or more on hands and playing more on the advanced options when you get certain hands. I was shocked at the amount of money he went thru! He must have dropped 2k easily until he got mad and just walked off and left the casino immediately. Then there was a young couple betting the same type of money. Only difference was - his girlfriend was winning like mad with bets of 200 dollars. My gosh. But one thing that I have always noticed is that I can use 200 dollars and play all nite. Eventually playing with the casino's money instead of my own. But those that are heavy into betting end up leaving soon with all their money gone. However, They never fail to tell you how you should play. I do not pay attention to them and just continue to bet very little amounts in my own way. Sometimes I get chancy and pull some not-to-smart moves. But its all part of the fun.

Anyways, I walked away with 900.00 and my girlfriend walked away with 400.00 last saturday. By the time we both got home we were dead tiered but enjoyed the people we met and the time we had.

I am going to take some of the money and invest in some hardware for the business. Havent decided on what yet but something I can improve my skills at. Perhaps a managed switch or more wireless Ubiquiti products, Or a upgrade to my aging AMD 6 core computer or server. I dont know yet. I might even use some of the money to do some maintenance on my car. I have to change the filter and fluid in my car transmission and also the cooling fluid.

We were quite lucky
