We just did work for a neighbor of yours!

I'm thinking about making a separate card, maybe post card size. The primary function of the card is to say, "We just did work for a neighbor of yours!". The primary goal of this is to drop this through mail slots or drop off to front offices of neighboring offices to clients of which we do work for.

Ideally the fact that we had already done work there may instill a bit of confidence in the potential client, and additionally allow an opening for a conversation. "Oh really? Who did you do work for and what did you do?" which then gives the potential client the added confidence of asking their neighbor how great we are!

Thoughts?

Highly effective, low cost. What's the reason not too?

I would suggest that you spend the money on postage and perhaps send as many as 3 within a few weeks of each other. In the U.S. I think there are some laws against placing things in mailboxes which are not postmarked mail.

Tampering with the mail, including personal addressed mailboxes is actually a federal offense.

Be sure to get permission from your customer beforehand though.

"Who did you do work for and what did you do?" sounds dodgy otherwise - privacy laws vary but people may not want you telling neighbors what you did - or even that you were there...

It could feel like you were talking about them behind their back - next they'd be wondering if you let on about their surfing habits ;) or lack of business backup

So ask your customer if they would be kind enough to provide an endorsement in exchange for a major discount on next service, and explain that you wish to mail postcards to the neighbours with his endorsement on them. Show him a sample and make it classy.

Maybe give him some coupons that give his neighbours a time-limited xxx% discount on their next service if they mention his name and the referral. Tell him/her that he/she will also get a yyy% discount/credit for each referral that turns into a customer in the next zzz days/weeks.

Permission will definitely be had before marking them on the door hanger. The thing is, I see it as no different than walking outside and someone seeing a magnet on your car or a car wrap and saying, "Hey did you do some work here?" So, I don't think that I would put the customers information on the door hanger but leave it open to be asked and then just say, oh yeah I just did some work for a dental office upstairs or something like that.
