Got an Inspiron 4100 which has the weirdo three pin jack like this :
You cannot see it but in the hole there are three pins and no internal wall contact. Any/all power would be in the pins.
The machine doesnt power up at all and the DC jack feels a little loose but I am trying to find out what voltages I should be getting off the adapter/plug.
The holes on the AC adapter plug are too small to put anything into them to run a test so I just mated it with a DC jack ( I carry all of them so I had this one) and tried pulling voltages that way.
The surrounding jack shield shows nothing when doing a ground test to either positive pin so its probably just for anchoring purposes.
The center pin comes up as ground and there are two positive pins, the right shows about 19.5 but the left comes up dead.
Google as I might, I cannot figure out of the other pin is some kind of signal back from the laptop or should be carrying power to the motherboard.
I dont have a known-good replacement of that kind of adapter to test with (well I just ordered it now, but thats going to take 2 days to get) so does anyone know if the other "positive" pin should be showing a voltage or if its something that signals back from the laptop.
On the precision barrel jacks you often get voltages on the second pins or can trace back to the motherboard to find them, but I dont want to tear down this laptop if I dont have to because the internals are in a weird cage and finding out the voltages would be quicker.
Thanks.
