Vista: Video Files Not Playing

I recently had to restore my Vista laptop back to it's "out of the box" state (I had a virus, long story, yadda yadda). To do so I had to move all of my files to my external hard drive. After doing the restore (woe, I hate starting over!) I moved all the files back. Most of the files were anime I'd downloaded on this computer. Well, now they won't play. DivX brings up the video, says it is there, but won't play it. VLC plays it, but there is no sound. Windows Media Player sucks and says something is missing when I haven't even touched it.

I've had a similar problem before -- are the files just getting their Vista compatibility fucked up in the move or what? Is there any way to fix this?

Thanks!

You're likely just missing the appropriate codecs to play the video or audio.
The easiest way to fix this is to download a codec pack like Klite

I would rule out codecs more or less since VLC is giving sound issues. I would say there is something wrong and it might be that the codec installs are corrupted. It is hard to say just what is missing but I would install as few codecs as possible. iTunes/Quicktime, DivX, Xvid, and VLC for all else I would also look into your audio and video drivers see if they are up to date.
