vista problem accessing internet

Dear friends,
I am having problem accessing internet on HP laptop with Vista.

When I plug the internet cable or started wireless, the network connection detects the connection with the following message:

"Currently connected to: Unidentified network Access: Local Only"


when I did ipconfig, the get the following message:
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfigration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.161.32
Subnet Mask..............................255.255.0.0
Default Gateway.........................:


For unknow reason the system doesn't detect the router IP and Gateway (192... )

When I add the IP/gateway manually and ipconfig shows the IP added but still doesn't connect to internet. Rest/reboot the router, no change
I checked the registry for autoconfigurationAddress value, and it set to 169.254.161.32.
When I compare this value to my Xp, which has internet connection, this value is set to 0.0.0.0

When you plugged into the network, were you asked to identify what type of network you were connecting to? (i.e. Home, Work, Public) That's usually one of the first things I'm asked whenever I connect to a new network and it determines what type of access you get -- local or local and internet.

Totally scanned the post and didn't notice the APIPA...my bad!

Have you checked the router that is providing the DHCP service? Do you have MAC filtering enabled?

Have you tried power-cycling the router?

Is MAC filtering lacated within router configuration or somewhere eles?

MAC filtering would be in the router's config somewhere. What kind of router is it?

it is Linksys brand. This is my friend's labtop. He couldn't access internet at his house using cable. He brought it to get help from me but I checked all the settings and am out of luck. The router is configured correctly. I have two other computer connected ( 1 wireless LT and Wkstantion) both can access the interent on router. The IP of each computer is generated automatically. In fact there was a time when what had three LTs connected to the router all receive the iPs automaticall without any trouble.

This Vista LT is only one that is connecting or detecting the IPs

Go to the Network and Sharing Center. Towards the middle it'll say the name of the network you are connected to on the left and on the right it'll have a "Customize" link. Click that link and it should give you the option to select Public or Private for the network. It should be set to Private.

I made the network changes to "Private" and still no connection. The computer has Norton 360 on it. When I checked the Event log, the Event ID is 6100. I looked up this but no clear explanation. It is really frustrating

Is this the only Vista machine on the network? Is it the only computer having problems?

I recently had this issue when I bridged my wireless and Ethernet. It took me forever to realize that was my cause. I have several Ethernet and wireless cards in out of my PC. I was experimenting with the feature, went to bed and just forgot.

On a probably more important note. You should establish that your problem is is software related. Can you boot into UBCD for Windows and establish connectivity. A Ubuntu Live disk and establish connectivity. ANYTHING other then that vista installation and establish connectivity.

Some Wireless on laptops (Disclaimer I don't mess with laptops) appear to have a shared wired and wireless card. Could it be toast or giving out? Do you have any USB wireless or wired Ethernet adapters to substitute. You should establish that something works on the PC on a basic level before you start guessing on settings. You may be compounding things. Usually settings dont change themselves make sure that your problem is software/driver/OS by checking it against different operating environments.

Open a command prompt with administrator rights and type …

netsh winsock reset

and then

netsh int ip reset

This should solve your issue

I have wasted enough time on this issue, I feel like running the recovery disk to restore the system the original state. The owner said the problem started on March 25th ( 4 months ago) and he doesn't know what changes he made. I can't see from the log the changes neither.
By the way, I run your commands but it didn't make any difference.

The computer has Norton 360 on it.

Download the Norton removal tool on another machine. Save on a memory stick and run on that machine. I'd be very surprised if that didn't solve the issue for you.

Thank you everyone for your help. Sorry I went on unexpected trip so I was late to respond. I was tired of spending too much time on this issue and I restored the system to the factory default and everything is working now. Luckily the laptop didn't have much data on it so it was easy to erase everything. If it had a lot of data, it would have been a different story. I know I took drastic action but what can you do.
