Vista no internet connection

i just want to ask some advice if what should i do...?

VISTA HOME PREMIUM SERVICE PACK 2
CORE 2 DUO T6400
2GB RAM
no internet connection, display on the taskbar is disabled, but the icon on the network connection it is enabled... is there a possibility that this is a virus,malware,spyware...i have tried to run combofix but it did not run the software... need some advice & help.. thanks & GOd bless

when i tried to click the icon from the task bar on the lower right corner of the laptop.. it says, "connection status:unknown The dependency service or group failed to start..."and the weird thing is when i tried to use ubcd, i can connect to the internet...can u give me an idea of what is wrong with the system? thanks..GOd bless...

Sadly there are probably 100 different ways to fix that exact error and it would seem no single solution works for every person, I mentioned this specific error some time ago and tried to get feedback to combine what has worked best for people but it did not really yield a great deal of answers like I had hoped. I managed to resolve it by manually changing services and adjusting network related settings but honestly it took way too long most of the time and as stated it was never the same way to resolve the problem each time it happened. I have also managed to merge the winsock and winsock2 reg entries from a fresh load and managed to get some improvements...there are really just too many potential ways to resolve this from what I've seen maybe some of this helps though in some small way or someone will come along with a few more suggestions.

no, it did not tell what service failed to start...but i have read from a thread that nlasvc.dll was corrupted. i tried replacing it and take ownership but i have no luck... but i did i suggest to make a reinstall because of the said issue, and i hope the client would agree... thanks for all of the input, it helps me more gain more knowledge with vista os... As mentioned above there are SO many fixes for this...and MethMan, sadly MS saw fit to be as least helpful as possible and state only the simplest of error messages.
