destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this action.

Got a vista machine with SP2. The user keeps getting this message every time you try to copy anything to a flash drive. We've tried multiple flash drives. Also cannot even create a text file on any flash drive.

I've googled for hours on the permissions etc. I think I've done every possible permission setting there is. All this too no avail at all. I also tried the "unlocker" tool to try and move a file and still cannot do it. Any pointers for this one??

Hopefully I'm not missing any details here. It's about a 5 year old dell inspiron. 530 series.

Also went into the administrator account and got the same issue on that account as well.

Thanks guys,

Landon

Also ran the windows repair tool from tweaking.com that fixes a lot of file permissions etc. That also did not change anything either.

Try creating a new user profile and try writing to the USB drive. If it works copy their data over to the new profile. If it doesn't work you have a corrupt operating system and you will need to clean install.

Yes, this^^

You probably know all this but...
Also, maybe someone else will find this thread.

Make new account - log-off/log-on OR restart.
Make he new user administrator - log-off/log-on OR restart.

Un-hide system hidden folders, files, etc. I think all you copy is all the folders from C: > Users > "User_name". Just the folders, including hidden ones.
DO NOT copy any of the NTUSER.DAT / ntuser.dat files.

Keep us posted.

Have you checked the attributes of the drives and folders and files to make sure they are not marked as read only?

Have you tried reformatting one of the drives?

Do you have the same problem in safe mode?

New account didn't change anything. Safe mode does work though! What's the best course of action since it works in safe mode?

Thanks,
Landon

Safe mode works regardless of which account. I did notice if you right click the flash drive and go to properties. Then to security and advanced security. Under the permissions there is a full control, read, and change. I didn't notice a "write" I always thought there was before. Strange.

Check the integrity of the HD, check the integrity of the O/S (chkdsk/sfc/etc), reset policies, MS windows FIXIT, A/V/malware scans, blah blah blah, too many other things.

Since its ok in safe mode I dont think it would be a hdd problem.
you probably made it worse trying to fix
registry got screwed try a system restore to a couple of weeks ago
or before it started.

if it wont restore look at backup dates in config/backup
I some times do it manually

Use this: Attribute Changer, to check the drives/folder/files attributes.

EDIT:
Also check for this registry key (I think this is the path):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
Look for WriteProtect in the right pane does it have a 1 or a 0 ? a one means on/yes and a zero means off/no.

If the HDD is having problems, it could cause problems with the Registry that wouldn't show up in Safe Mode.

That being said, I can see an A/V (or leftover bits thereof) causing similar problems.

I run Kaspersky Pure 3.0 on my main machine and every now and then when I download a file directly to a memory stick when the download is done it will say something like "the file has been moved or deleted". If I do it again I get the same result, but if I download it to any location on the hard drive it will work fine. If I disable KP and do the download to the stick it will work fine. What's weird is that at no time does KP wake up to tell me there is something wrong with the file and the files are usually from confirmed known-good sites.

Just want to confirm, an AV or remnant could be causing this too. Sometimes you really got to hate computers. :p

If it happens on all flash drives, then it isn't your disks. I'd start with reinstalling your MainBoard Drivers, USB drives, etc. I had something similar happen once, and it was just a weird driver issue.
