I would like to create a VHD of a bootable drive and mount it in VirtualBox (again as a bootable drive) on the same computer.
From what I have read, the VHD image will not boot in the VirtualBox because of conflicts in the drive signature.
Is there a workaround for this issue?

Not that I am aware of. It is similar to slaving a drive, creating a vhd, and trying to attach the vhd with the original drive still slaved - no dice.
I wonder if, using Acronis, the following would work:
1. back-up computer 'A'
2. Do a dissimilar restore to computer 'B'
3. back-up computer 'B'
4. convert the back-up from step 3 to a VHD
5. Use the VHD from step 4 on computer 'A' in VirtualBox

Don't see why not. You've ditched the old hdd sig. when doing the dissimilar restore.
