I was just curious if it was commonly done by some of you. Sometimes real experience is nice to hear. I like asking questions, just ask my mom, I drove her crazy.

Most laptops only support two monitors, one external and the built in one. It doesn't matter how you connect it. If it's an older laptop with HDMI and VGA, I'd expect to only be able to use one port at a time.

Now, that being said... if it's got an nVidia 3D card in it, the 9xx series on up usually support three monitors, but not all mobile chipsets extend that support to the unit in question.

He means on a computer that has a HDMI and a VGA port. Wants to run one regular monitor in each port. Essentially wil become a 3 monitor system including the laptop screen.
C840 does not seem to have a HDMI port.

You can use a device such as these to enable the use of multiple monitors on laptops:

... which are essentially USB-attached/powered graphics cards, so don't expect gaming-capable performance. They generally work ok for less GPU-intensive applications though.

At least in the Intel camp with Intel HD graphics (since 2nd gen) the processors support 3 displays. That would be the built in display via eDP, then whatever outputs it has.

So if you have a laptop with VGA and HDMI and Intel graphics or better there should be no issue. I would say VGA is not as common today. Also many laptops seem to just have HDMI.

For instance my Intel ThinkPad has HDMI and MiniDP. Both can be used plus the internal display.

AMD might be a different story.

Ah, yes. Looking into it and it wasn't the dell, but my little Acer Netbook which has the VGA and HDMI. Sorry for the mix up
