We all know how important having backlinks are, this is obvious. Would answering tech and service related questions do any good. Seems like a no-brainer when you factor in the massive amount of viewers on Yahoo Answers and the legitimacy of the site. Has anyone tried this? Was traffic to their site increased?

Backlinks from Yahoo Answers are nofollow, so they have little effect on search engine optimization. But you can get referral traffic by leaving your link in your answers if the question is relevant to your offerings and your answer is relevant and helpful.

Don't do too much in short period of time or Google will notice it is unnatural....

Where do you live? What is the population? Here in Wyoming, my town is 55k. The chance of one of those people seeing my answer and being interested enough to look me up to see that I am local, is slim to none. In LA, a little more likely.

Is it a bad idea? No. It is an extra 30 seconds of typing when you are already typing a message. It may help. I do not see how it could hurt you, except for a few ways. First, people from across the country may email you for free advice. Second, if the information you gave was not completely accurate, with even one minor mistake, and it is pointed out, it could lose whatever credibility you have with someone down the road.

This is all true. But free national exposure never hurts right? Especially when %70 of problems (made up statistic) can be rectified remotely or over the phone.
