Use xp home edition key on xp home edition sp3

I have a little problem i hope you guys can help me out.

I am workin on a customers machine Dell Inspiron 6000
Currently they are running windows xp home edition.
The machine is screwed up really badly so im doing a N&P.
Problem is when i type in the original key located on the sticker the installation says the key is invalid.

Is there anyway i can use the original key?

If you are installing from a Dell disk you don't need the key.

Not a dell disk. The customer couldnt find the original cd's so i have to use my copy of xp.

So use your key and change it after to the Dell original.

Or make a Dell OEM disk from yours - they are the most useful to have a copy of.

There have been several threads here on how to do both these in the last few months.

Is the disk you are using an OEM disk or retail? because the keys are not transferable in that way.

Like MobileTechie said, the keys aren't transferable from Retail to OEM. But, if you have any XP OEM disk you can alter the PID number and use Nlite to slipstream a copy that will work for any specific manufacturer.
