Good evening everyone,

I downloaded the USB toolkit awhile ago I love it and use it almost daily. I have added several programs and almost all that have come out here since then.
I have gone to several portable apps. websites and forums and cant find an answer to my questions. I remember reading some of these somewhere but dont remember where.

1. Do you all have a specific folder on your hard drive, in the same order as your USB stick?

2. Is there a way to update the programs or spyware / virus definitions. Such as with UBCD4win config. button. or do you update each individually? How often do you update and about how long does it take?

3. Are you worried about catching anything off of the computer you are working on?

4. Have you ever left / lost one?

Sorry its long and drawn out and any info you could lend would be a great help.

Thanks,
Les

hi les

1. there was a post recently on where someone had instructions on how to set up a folder with the same data as on the key and then having them sync using a program when you insert the key using autorun (just can't remember where it was I'm sure it was here on TN do a serach and you'll find it) found it http://www.technibble.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3764&highlight=sync

Which makes it easier to have everything sync'd all you would have to do is write a batch file to update the defs to run as a task every week or every day and then when you put in your usb thumb key it sync's with the new defs

that would solve question 1 and 2

and to prevent catching any viruses from the clients I use a sd card which has a write lock.

never lost one yet but you can put your name on it.
They are so cheap an 2gb sd card is $8 or less and a card reader is $2 or around that price I wouldn't be so worried about losing them.

just my 2 cents after a long day and a few cups of wine. :)

1. Yeah, I keep one as a backup, and update everything from there before I copy it over.

2. I don't know of one

3. Yeah, it can happen. Your best option is to find a USB stick with a write-protect switch, or run your tools from a CD when using a computer you know is infected.

4. I've forgot mine a couple times, but always got it back. I plan to get a stack of 1-2GB ones so I don't have to worry about leaving one. Still looking for a good deal on ones with write-protect switches.

Thanks for the link Abe, I knew I had seen it somewhere.
Ill have to learn about batch files and all but i'll give it a go.

Jory, when you say update everything do you do each individually? I'm sure if you are like me you have a ton of apps. to update.

Thanks,
Les

as for the updateing if you can't use batch files you could try sumo and hitman pro 2 they are both featured on the articles by bryce

sumo checks the computer for installed aps and checks for updates and hitman is for av's

I've only went through all my apps and checked for updates once. It was a really long and hard process only to find 95% were the same version. Now I will just check the random program here and there. Sometimes if I use a piece of software I haven't used in a while I check it.

I was thinking about releasing my portable collection and asking people to help keep up with everything. Maybe start a wiki and people can volunteer to check a small portion of the apps and report the status monthly.

3. Yes. I got a worm from a client's machine the other day. So I boot up in a Linux or MacOs PC and delete the partition, format it, then move the drive to my PC and copy my files back over.

4. Nope. I attach it to my truck keys. I can't get too far without them. :D

I originally ran so called portable copies of everything on my stick but I found when I did a Right Click on toolkit folder Send To F drive that the updating of the drive took godawful forever because I had at least 300 megs of stuff that was in multiple files for each app so I ended up just putting all the installers on the disk so when I do the right click Send To it takes a couple of minutes instead of an hour.

Alternatively you can quick format the thumb drive each time and then do you folder dump and it will be fairly fast but still not as fast if everything is installer based.
