I keep getting the message "please insert a disk in drive" whenever i try to access a USB drive on a windows xp system. I installed all the updates and tried changing the drive letter. I checked different forums and didn't get anywhere.

I notice that when the drive is inserted windows labels the type as CD-ROM. Can i change this type? The computer does not have a cd/dvd drive.

I know it's an issue with the computer because i can access the drive on my work computer.
Thanks

How does disk managment see the drive, if you can try formatting the drive?
Edit: By the way does the drive have any important data stored on it?

It could the the combination of computer and drive. these 2 just don't play well together.
Some flash drives do pretend to be a CDROM for autorun and portable apps purposes, sandisk cruisers are one example. Try a different flash drive on the same computer, just in case.

the flash drive work ok on other computers, also i tried other flash drives that are working fine on other systems. it's definitely this computer (windows XP) that has the issue and there is no cd/dvd drive. all the the usb ports is the same.
Also the computer recognize the the flash drive when i click the icon on the bottom right it recognize the flash drive as what it is. just in explorer is says it's a cd-rom and i should insert a disk.

This is very spooky. I have never heard about this. Is it possible to try using the drive in a livecd PE? if it works in PE then it's windows doing it.

Usually USB devices are automatically setup. when it doesn't it's usually a lost cause.

I had a U3 drive that showed up as a CD Drive (e:) and, then also, as a regular drive (F:). This would let Win98 see 'the drive' and then see the contents of it ... which was pretty convenient as far as drivers and crap went.

Anything unusual about the drive itself?

Thanks

i tried today with an external hard drive and it work fine. a kingston data traveler wanted to format.
The kingston dataVault displays two drives as with U3 from sandisk. But it still displays insert a disk in drive. so i can't login.
The other drives wasn't working before. i checking for more updates.
