Hi, anybody know if I can use a usb 3.0 type A cable (both ends) to transfer files from a black screened macbook 2012 A1398? I have googled but not found definitive answer.

I don't think Apple re-enabled USB TDM on those until a few years later. If the device in question only has USB, like an Air, then that TDM will work.

All it has is two USB 3.0 A ports, 2 thunderbolt 2.0 and a HDMI, no usb c. you think USB 3.0 A won't work then?

Don't think so. TB was the TDM port. It's been my experience that, on older machines, Apple only enables TDM on USB if they have no other ports. But given the symptoms you posted I doubt you'd get TDM to work anyways. By the way Thunderbolt is the same as mini-display port for cable connection purposes.

I saw that, I'd buy one of those but all I'm finding is them with HDMI on one end, unless thunderbolt to HDMI would work!!!
So confusing

Yes I do but the other machine only has USB and HDMI

What about a usb a to thunderbolt connector for that machine?

btw which models are you trying to transfer data from? Wouldn’t it be easier to remove the HDD and use an external connector and just use migration assistant?

A usb 3.0 A to thunderbolt 2.0 is pretty impossible to find, lots of thunderbolt 3.0 and it has a different type ssd that the other macs in it so I special adapter would have to be purchased for just that model, dumb.

so you want help and you reply like that? Ok then good luck

oh no, I meant the mac model was dumb;)

open the 2012 model, remove HDD, connect to external HDD connector to usb a, connect said HDD to the MacBook that you want to copy the data to, open “migration assistant “ and copy files, easypeezy
