Unable to read SATA 2.5 Drive.

Hello, I am trying to back a clients data up using my USB external HD reader. The drive will show up in my computer for a split second, and then I am prompted to reformat the drive. Note that I am on Windows 7. Really not sure on what to do, but I really need to know because IF this was a hard drive failure with data back up I might be screwed other than using puppy linux. I would like to see my HD reader work though. Also the hard drive started Beeping..? I have never heard a HD beep before.

I have had problems with Windows 7 working correctly with a USB HD reader at work. I really do not know what the problem could be. Wish I still had an XP machine around so I could try it. I do have my home server thats running Server 2k3. I will try it with it.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but just build an XP machine if you think you need one. You are a tech and I am sure you can build a decent XP box for $100+ or so. You know you are going to need it again (and again) so why are you limiting yourself.

I have XP, Vista, 7 and Win 2000 server boxes in my shop plus I sometimes sneak stuff off the live W2k3 servers when I need files. I also have a XP netbook and XP and Vista laptops just for comparing things or stealing stuff for clients machines.

ps- dont put the drive on a USB port if you dont need to. If you have a box inhouse/inhome that you can open then put the drive directly on the onboard SATA/PATA cables and get rid of all of the USB nonsense from your diag process if you think it might be stopping you.

I ended up hooking into an internal SATA port which worked. Not sure why W7 does not like HD reader, but yea like you say I need to go with works.

Backup that data.. Yeah you should always have a computer with an old OS on it.. You never know when you might need it. Yes windows 7 is great but we still need xp or something else. When I do HD recovery I connect the drive internally to a desktop system.

me too, it's faster than squeezing it thru USB

I prefer XP for my recovery machine, also faster and with less bells'n'whistles
