Ubuntu Running Slow

I just put Ubuntu 9.04 on one of my old systems. the specs are below:

30gig hard drive
Pentium 3 processor
192mb of ram

It took a long time to install and it isn't running very fast. Do you think the memory is the main bottleneck?

Those aren't the greatest specs in the world for one thing. How slow are we talking about? Don't expect it to fly just because it's linux. I believe if you bump up the memory a bit, you'll see a big difference.

Minimum RAM is 256MB, and even then, with that spec, it's gonna be slow.

you might need to do a streamlined installation and disable services you
don't need.

I think you'll have a lot better success with a computer with those stats using Xubuntu . I've used it on older computers such as yours, and it runs lots faster. As mentioned above, it wouldn't hurt at all to drop in some more memory if you have it laying around, though - 192MB is on the low side for Xubuntu as well.

Enjoy!

I formatted the hard drive and installed PCLinuxOS and it is way faster. I like it better than Ubuntu. I am still planning on upgrading the memory to 512mb but PCLinux runs suprisingly fast on 192mb of ram. I like PCLinux's GUI better, it is more like windows

I am working on it right now and can't belive how fast it is running on 192mb of ram.
