Ubiquiti launching residential hardware division, new home Wi-Fi system

This is part of the new wave of wifi routers. There is a lot of competition coming out, but you have to like Ubiquiti's track record and price points.

Just read a bit on it. Not available for another 6/8 weeks according to website. I dont know. Whenever I hear about "extenders" I think service calls :)

However, I have grown to trust Ubiquity for my wireless and networking needs. They are pretty good!

Yeah I'm against extenders myself.....
Wondering if the system works over powerline.

Price wise, I think it's fine. How much is a typical decent router? About 100 bucks or more.
How much are wireless extenders each? About 50 to 150 bucks..depending on features.

Total beginning price of 199 bucks is pretty fair, IMO.

Sure, but do you need the extenders to function? What if I just want the router for my small 1000 sq ft house. So with out the extenders just $129.95-149.95 ish.

I'm assuming you wouldn't go purchase a 3 piece "extender kit" if you didn't need extenders...yes, logic dictates that for a small <1k sq ft home you'd just purchase a single wireless router for basic needs. That clearly is not the market this is aimed at. Dunno if this unit will sell "solo"...or more than likely, they'll release a solo wireless router kit.

Many people go spend 199 or 250 bucks or more on the latest Asus or Netgear wireless routers. Or even more, for Apples Airport Extremes.

The router is an AP so the price is pretty reasonable, $200 for a wireless router and two AP's. If the config is as simple as setting up an Airport Extreme and the performance is as good as their other stuff they should sell a lot. The down side is I now have to get a crowbar to pry 200 clams from my clenched fist. LOL!!!

They probably saw in their data that many consumers were purchasing their hardware and decided that it would be smart to invest in it.

My biggest hold up offering Ubiquity is no support outside of forums. I can't think of the last time I had to call Linksys or SonicWall, but sure as I install something from Ubiquity I would need to.

Actually they added support last year, I made a post about it here.

They even have online chat support on that page above.

However, I'll testify that their forum support is fan-tas-tic. And their staff frequent the forums, and provide lots of help, in addition to some really knowledgeable members there. I've used their forums to get some help for some pretty complicated setups, and it's great.

Beats the heck out of calling some level 1 helpdesk in India when you call most other brand network equipment support.

I did not know they added support. I have been looking for something to replace SonicWall with. I will have to go back and give them a strong look.

Most of my business clients use Linksys business equipment. I don't have any complaints with them other than the price point of their access points.

If it's ANYTHING like their commercial stuff.... it will do just fine.

I deployed my one and only Ubiquiti Unifi AP to a local sportsmans club that had loads of issues.
I haven't had a single phone call since, and it's been months. They were losing Wifi on a daily basis
and were about to go purchase their 3rd wireless router. I know they spent more on the walmart crappo's
then they did for the one Ubiquit I put in for them.

$200 seems like a really fair price, for the router and two range extenders.

Even for the average every day person, this is a router that should last for years and again if the hardware
is anywhere as good as the commercial stuff then it will be well worth the money. I can't tell you how many
$80 net gears I've gone through. I just might have to get one of these!

They've been pushing us hard in the past months....Linksys reps even came to visit our office 2 weeks ago, left a bunch of swag....new catalogs with their biz line of switches, cameras, wireless. I used to use Linksys Small Business Series gear quite a few years ago and we had some level of Linksys reseller program. Did hundreds of those early BEFSX41 routers (not the home model BEFSR41)..and then the RV0 series..RV082, RV016, some RVO42, and lots of the SRW series switches.. But prefer HP ProCurve switches, and Ubiquiti now. We're 99% biz clients...and shoot for higher end now. And having Ubiquiti on one centralized cloud controller makes life so easy.

They called me a few weeks ago and said they were sending me a lot of stuff. Probably the same things you got. I'm around 90% business also, but most are 10 to 25 users. The Linksys business equipment has been fine. A few need more security options, that's where the SonicWalls come in.

When I signed up with Linksys I called my rep. and asked about demo units. He ask what do I thing I would most commonly use? I told him the LRT224 router, the LAPN600 access point (they didn't have AC at the time), and the LGS528 managed switch. He said it's on the way at no charge, yours to keep. So that's who I went with.

Yeah a few blue binder-size boxes. Some pens. Some folding blue plastic rulers. A USB thumb drive. Can't remember the rest, our office manager had a few boxes and was passing them around....I politely declined with a "Meh...nah!"

I was semi excited about the LRT units when they came out, hoping they came out with a better router than the prior RV180 or RV220 models, as I'd loved the venerable RV0 series. But over the long haul, a couple of glitches. I stopped using them.
