Ubiqiti multiple USG

Hi,

have a client with 3 locations. Currently they don't have a USG at any site and we have all access points in one site. So if we change the wifi password it's done at all sites.
Now they have a new shop and I'm putting in a USG as well. Still works fine by the look of it as it's only one USG. So each location is doing it's own DHCP just the one with the USG I can control via the controller.
What if I put USGs at the other sites as well ?
It looks like you can only have one USG per site and can't have sub sites or something. That would mean I have to split the client up in 3-4 sites and configure wireless separate for each site ?

Unifi manages a single gateway.

The Unifi controller is more than just controlling wireless, it also controls the switches and gateway, defines the network IP ranges, VLANs, DHCP, port forwarding, WAN config of the gateway. To sum up...it manages the entire network from top to bottom. 99.9% of networks have a single gateway.

In the case of your client here...you may be better off doing a cloud controller just for them and their multiple locations.
There have been feature requests to allowing Unifi to manage multiple gateways. Not sure how much traction that request has gotten.

Yep based on my research when I started doing larger Ubiquiti installs a cloud controller is what you want. From what I've read the USG is nice but not required in Ubiquiti setups and there are gateways that do what the USG does and/or better for less money. The USG from what I read is mainly to get the full Ubiquiti setup so that all of your bubbles turn green and everything looks and talks pretty.

But @YeOldeStonecat is way more knowledgeable than I am so I'd follow his lead.

Right all the Unifi APs and even switches work fine without the Unifi gateway, it's just..with a USG..you get to see all the power and ease of the whole Unifi controller unleashed. Out of our...near 200 Unifi client networks, over 60% of them are behind router/firewalls from other brands...notably Untangle.

I actually prefer having local Unifi installs "per client"..versus a big cloud controller now, but in the case of a client like this...well, doesn't really matter actually, 6 of 1, half a dozen of the other.

Replicating the wireless info is easy...I actually recall reading there's a way to make a wireless config and plop that across other sites like a template.

Ok. Usually we don't use USG either but a Draytek but as everything is new for this location I thought I might as well do the lot.
Will setup a new site for them.

That's actually a pretty cool idea. We don't have any clients with multiple sites so I never thought of that. Obviously you would need the ability to set different IP schemes though for VPN if needed, but wireless across multiple sites would be nice.
