I've had UBCD4WIN blue screen when it was loading, due to the RAM being defective. But, never while diagnosing, unless there was a problem with the iso I made.
UBCD4Win is windows; windows isn't going to like big hardware failure whether it's installed onto the hard disk or running from a live cd. The fact that the machine you're talking about is infected shouldn't impede on ubcd4win's effectiveness at all
UCBD4WIN is WinPE based, which is essentially a watered down, bare minimum windows. It blue screening is no different than blue screening in windows with the exception that there won't be a dump file because the hard disk is mapped to RAM.
Yes, It found thousands of errors. But I am not exactly sure how that program works and was not 100% sure of its findings. It seems like memtest goes in a continuous error checking loop. I started it last night and it was still going this morning 8 hours later.
I think it's hardware related as well.
Laptop specs:
HP dv2500
Vista Home
500 GB HDD
4GB Ram
nvidia
Amd Athlon X2 64
I'd say that the fact that there are thousands of errors on Memtest, coupled with supporting symptoms probably means it's one or more sticks of bad memory..
